Eggs Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 The original I took from my Zed had a blown head gasket. Do these engines crack blocks and heads easily? I'm trying to gauge if it's worthwhile seeing if anyone wants this for a rebuild or chucking it in the scrap pile? Quote
Medallion Man Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 I'd guess that each would have to be assess individually as the damage can be varied and also because of different response ... so if it is a mess and cracked then it's junk.. but if it was only a slight blow due to failed gasket and the block is clearly in good condition.. it might be work something to someone.. best to ask Jimmer (or Jeff) Quote
Stephen Posted November 17, 2015 Posted November 17, 2015 I wouldn't bin it for a blown HG, put it that way. Strip it down and inspect it. Get a machine shop to check the head and block. Quote
Eggs Posted November 17, 2015 Author Posted November 17, 2015 Thanks guys. I don't need it myself it was more to see if someone else could make use of it. I got in on the engine stand tonight and started stripping so I should have the heads off next time I'm there and will check for anything obvious Quote
lymon Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 if the engine/crank isn't seized, then the block will probably be fine. Depending on how much it overheated, the piston rings and bores need to be inspected/replaced/re-honed if needed. My experience is that the head(s) can usually be binned after a HG failure. If the head(s) have never been skimmed before and distortion is less the 0.2mm, then in theory it can be re-used, but chances are you will have issues later on (eg. camshaft failure/seizure) 1 Quote
Eggs Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 Cheers chaps, I'm going to chuck it in the scrap pile Quote
Stephen Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 Shame. I could do with a crank rods and Pistons out a turbo block. Quote
