Had an email from my broker ( below ) seems insurance set for a little hike (again)

We feel that as your brokers it is our duty to advise you of any major changes within the insurance industry that can have a financial impact on you.

 

Following the Governments Summer Budget 2015 it was decided that they would be enforcing an increase in the current rate of insurance premium tax.

 

In terms of the impact on you the customer it will mean that as from 1st November 2015 any policy subject to UK insurance premium tax will increase from the current rate of 6% to the new rate of 9.5%. This impact will see an increase of 3.5% in addition to any insurance rating changes.

 

We will always endeavour to provide you the customer our most competitive premium on all insurance products but with a government enforced change this will mean an unavoidable premium increase at your next renewal date.

Z32 is not an ideal first car I'm afraid! I'm surprised you even get quoted for on this type of vehicle.

For the moment i just drive around a small hatch off my parents insurance so its nice and cheap, the quotes i have tried with say a 1.6 mx5 (non specialist) are above 5k. So even with a specialist its not going to be anywhere near affordable, especially as i still have 1.5 years of school left

You're better off waiting until you're over 21 I think. There are guys on here who have gotten insurance at 19 I think and it was very expensive. I think for classic car policies, you have to be over 21....iirc.

I would discourage fronting which is what your doing with the small hatch for a kick off.... as if you do have an accident they will not pay out.

If i wasnt i would be paying 3.5k for a 1.1l fiat panda...

Its also not exactly fronting as it is my Mum's main car and she drives it the most, I don't own it.

Yup - IPT is on the increase.... Not ideal, but the government does have to balance the books and continue to pull the country back to its feet again.... Whilst these small increases do add up, a 3.5% increase in tax on base premiums is not going to break the bank for most people. As Si says, it's barely £12 per year on many peoples' policies.

One of those strange anomalies that exist in the world of cars, UK registered cars can be covered by expat insurance if you have an address in Portugal / Spain and is done through a broker that has offices in the UK, Portugal and Gibraltar too so it also covers the UK showing on the Insurance data base in the UK but is based upon primary use in Portugal, useful if we pop back in the car on visits, oh and much cheaper than UK only cover too !
