Question regarding replacing rear main seal

As the engine is back together and in the car, can it be replaced without removing the retainer it sits in? I really don't want to be disturbing the seal around the sump if I can help it.

    Yeah, it's just a little seal in its own right. Be careful removing as you don't want to damage the aluminium seal face. I did mine when I did the manual conversion.
