Finally finished replacing my clutch last night after no end of problems, but when I took it for a short drive this morning it's making a weird noise when you work the clutch, kind of like a grinding. Depressed it's fine, but still makes a bit of a noise when pressed. Kind of sounds like the release bearing but I put a new one in so don't really see how it could be that.

Pretty gutted after it's taken me far longer than it should have done, any ideas what it is? Should I not worry about it for now and see if it clears with a few more miles on it?

Is it recommended that you put a bit of grease on the bearing (sorry all I can think of)

Yea I did, hence I'm stumped

Could it be the gearbox or propshaft? Could it be just settling down?

I don't think it could be the propshaft as it does it stationary, but may be the input shaft I suppose. Will take it for a longer run and see what happens

sound like you could have put the clutch release bearing on back to front.

Ha God I hope not, I'm sure I haven't though. I took it for a longer drive and it was fine so just took it 50 miles into London and it's still fine, not noisy at all so hopefully it was nothing to worry about! Will see what it's like tomorrow after it's been sat overnight. Thanks for the replies

Try operating the clutch without the engine running to see if the noise is related to the the pedal mechanism or the hydraulic, any of these maybe under a little more pressure from the new clutch cover and maybe need some wd40 on.

If the noise is when the engine is running only it likely related to the release bearing or/ and moving parts, depending on the clutch spec the bearing carrier have different depths and poss you have the wrong one if you used a big clutch kit.

No it's only with the engine on. It's only an xtd kit, so no problem with the carrier as far as I know.

It was noisy again this morning and then cleared up again, so it seems like it's only a problem when cold. I'm wondering whether it's just a bit of a noisy gearbox? I used MT-90 oil, think I remember reading before that can make them a bit noisier?

It only makes the noise when in gear so that's making me think it's the gearbox. Bit whiney when you put it in gear then makes a noise when you move the clutch pedal. Not sure if it's only in first, didn't think to check before it warmed up. But I've driven it a good 120 miles or so and seems fine really...

It did still make a bit of noise when reversing when warm though. I also have a short rattle when accelerating through roughly 1700-2000 revs in any gear, but I would think that's an exhaust or something rather than the clutch/gearbox?

Take a quick look at this thread of mine from some years back: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?145251-Nice-clutch-tech-thread&highlight=clutch+fork the fork can rattle at the revs you mention if worm, even replacing the rubber shroud can stop it as the old one gets perished.

Unless you had previous selection or crunching issues with the gear change I would be inclined to drain the box and refill with EP75W-90 semi-synthetic gear oil, sure it will help bring some of that unsupported bearing noise. ( link ) http://www.granvilleoil.com/downloads/Which-Gear-Oil.pdf

Ah very interesting, thanks for that! Is it possible to change the boot with the gearbox still in place? Can't exactly remember how it fits in right now

Yes just undo the two bolts holding the slave cylinder to the gearbox and you can pull the old one over the fork lever and refit a new one.
