Hi Folks

Just got back from terminal velocity at Woodbridge where I have suffered a bit of

We took off well (bit of burning clutch smell)

140 in fourth change up nothing left, would not go so took my foot off the gas coasted through the line at 80.

Now running on 5 cylinders.

Limped home and put to bed in the garage.

Any thoughts on what I have broken this time with my lead foot?

Cheers from your friendly neighbourhood idiot.

Thank you will do

I was thinking I might have fried a coil pack.

I was really giving it the beans :w00t:

Just weird how it dropped a cylinder.

Lumpy ride home !

Oh dear, walk away from it, shut the garage and don't think about it for a day. Go back to it, and check it over with no assumptions of what may have happened, just check it front to back top to bottom.

Over thinking things had never pointed me in the right direction. :clover:

Good plan Tom I'm off on hols tonight so a few days away from it is probably a good plan.

Gutted though I was right with the Porsche I was running with.

1.5 miles we were about a mile down and I'm doing 140 thinking naughty 160's are coming.

Not to be never mind sunshine and sangria here we come.

Yeah, check all connections. If your connectors are old and crap the air speed and vibration can see them pop off.

Which Zed was it?

Best case scenario it's a loose coil pack connector.

Then you have coincidental failures such as a faulty injector, loom issue etc.

Next up, you've got fuelling/timing related symptoms such as a melted plug with no damage to piston or cylinder.

Worst case scenario you've killed either #5 or #6 piston. Not enough fuel, too much timing, failing fuel pump.

I've not yet come across a fried coil pack as per the S13 or S14 which can suffer from failure at higher power levels, they are incredibly good on the VG with no issues at 700bhp+

Assuming it's not a loose connection and something has physically failed:

Find the cylinder that is down by removing each coil pack connector one at a time until there is no change in engine note/rpm.

Then you need to determine if it's a lack of fuel or spark. Use a long screwdriver with the blade end on the injector and the handle pressed fimly against your ear. The ticking is loud enough to determine if the injector isn't firing. Try it on a known working injector first to get an idea of the sound.

If the above doesn't uncover a faulty injector, pull the plug. Hopefully it won't be covered in oil. Place the plug back in the coil pack and carefully rest the side electrode against the plenum and start the car to determine if the plug is firing. If it isn't, swap a known working coil pack and see if the issue moves to another cylinder.

Perform a full compression test as a matter of course to determine the health of the engine.

Give me a shout if you need any assistance.

Hopefully it's just a connector, but the above should cover most of what you may need to do :)

Nice picture mate.

Fingers crossed for your fault finding mate.

After owning several zeds I tend not to worry now when things like this happen as it usually turns out to be a simple fix.

Cheers

The other one is back home with that door filler on it now so I need to get that off for you.

How's the renovation going?

To be honest, I haven't actually managed to touch it yet as I've been so busy with my HiFi business I literally haven't had any spare time :(

I have however bought it some new shoes, a new gearknob and steering wheel and am waiting to get it over to my mate Pete rosenburg so he can give it a good once over and replace the cambelt and water pump.

How is the other zed doing?

Have you got it fully up and running yet?

runs and drives well just got to clean the interior put a few bits back in and blow a coat off black paint over the bright red passenger door

she drives alright but doesn't feel like she is boosting properly so a bit of fiddling and hopefully it will scare me like the now infamous tomomontana testdrive

I'm sure with a bit of time that parts zed will turn out to be a proper gem mate!

I'm still surprised at how rust free it was.

Once you find and fix the boost leak, let me know and I'll take you out for another test drive :lol:

Right - so finally she comes out of my garage fires up runs on 5 as I expected and we trundle down to the friendly mechanic.

My master plan being that the engine out of my car will have its misfire sorted (definitely absolutely certainly an easy fix because it is absolutely definitely certainly electrical).

Shanksjacks on here (Steve) will have that lump in replacement for his which is hydro locked for the second time and engine with all the goodies will come out of my other car and into the red one.

I know its been years since I broke it!

No compression at all on 6, bits of piston welded to the plug and 3 other plugs partially melted.

As per the title OOOPS!

Now I have a good engine for mine, but this has left Steve high and dry.

Does anyone out there have a good spare twin turbo engine they may want to part with.

We obviously have more than enough of everything else between us.

Steve is a really nice guy and I'm gutted for him so just having a punt to see if I can help him out.

And of course Hi to everyone and I promise to stop being a lurker and post pics when she's running again.

Yep sadly

It's proper weird I drove it 20 miles without a glitch to get to the garage stood outside listening to it run with Adam ( mechanic ) and we both said its just a misfire, no funny noises just lumpy running.

Pull the plugs for a compression test and holy crap!

I suppose its testament to how bullet proof these engines are normally that it still ran having suffered a catastrophic failure.

Thanks Richie

Steve's engine is hydro locked as well so I'm having a mooch around to see if I can find a good one for him.

We think his block is cracked as he's got oil and water mixing in the cylinder.

My block bizarrely may be ok so worst case scenario there may be a build option there, but it all tots up the money sadly.
