Was on the way to totb too.

So, car was driving fine, no problem at all. All of a sudden, misfiring and loss of power to a stop.

As it wouldn't rev very high we though it was the maf, unplugged it and the car seemed to start fine. But very rough and we've limped to somewhere safe.

So, when the car starts with the maf unplugged, if we plug it back in, the car dies. Won't start with it plugged in. We tried a known working maf from the other car and still the same, won't start with the maf plugged in. Also struggling to start anyway with I'm thinking could be the engine getting flooded.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Lee

Thing ID, its a dry day although it did rain last night. Plus it drove for an hour or so pretty faultlessly.

Plus we tried a working maf.

Give it some time then try again, maybe the PTU is breaking down. Have a good loom round though and just check the CAS plug etc hasn't wiggled loose. I've had that before.

We took the cas plug off and back on. Will give it half an hour or so and try it again. The ptu is a series 2

Not sure if it matters here but I changed the fuel pump a week or so ago. I'm not sure its that though as it starts with the maf unplugged. Also the fpcu is bypassed if that makes any odds.

Is it drawing in unmetered air from the balance bar or similar area?

  • Author

I don't think so, ID expect if there was an air leak like that, that it would still run (please someone say if I'm wrong here)

If it's drawing in extra air it will effectively run a lean mixture and struggle to move the car

I am mate yes. First time its really broken down (apart from when I ran out of fuel that time lol)

Yeah we're getting recovered but the eta is 3 hours. First bloke that came out was a canny, but didn't really have a clue over me and PaulZX but obviously we know a decent amount between us.

I shorted the ecu to pull the error codes through on to the dash and it gave 12, which is the MAF, but that would probably be there due to starting the car with it being unplugged.

I do have another question about this. If the error code exists and I try another MAF without clearing the codes, would it still not work due to the error existing?

The error code is just stored info, from say last start, the ecu is self learning and will rectify itself with a new maf fitted, but the code read on a consult or datascan would still be shown in the log and can be reset from there, in any coded part exchange its usually best to reset the ecu

Well, I'm home everyone which is great. I'll let you all know what I find on the car... Hopefully I will find it anyway

Glad you're home OK. The symptoms sound like a fuel pressure problem...have you checked if any water has got into the fuel pump fuse compartment?

Hope you get it sorted.

Hello matey. I've not checked the fuel pump fuses specifically, but I checked all of the ones in the engine bay and were fine. Not sure if the fuel one is in there. That being said though, the car will start with the MAF unplugged, so it must be getting fuel.
