Normally my car performs perfectly in the warm weather.

Never misses a beat and the viscous fan works as it should.

Temperature gauge sits at just under half way and ticks over at 750rpm

However, after a short casual trip yesturday, I pulled on to my drive and heard the auxillary fan cut in.

Never done this before, so came as a supprise.

Should I be concerned? or is this a natural occurance due to the exceptional weather?

It seemed to be working in relationship to the climate control, but I am unsure as to ecxactly how this is supposed to work if I was honest.

Any advice greatly appreciated as I am reluctant to drive it.

Did you check the coolent level after it had cooled down mate?

Not as yet Gary.

I will be checking it tonight when I get in from work.

I will let you know what I find.

when i first got my car i drove it round for a few dayd then its was the hottest day of the year the fan kicked in it was the first time it did it and the last time when the hot weather went i remember ringing a few people about it told its just doing as it should be

Afaik, the aux fan is triggered in a few scenarios. Firstly in an ECU triggered situation where it's "overheating" 105 I think. Or it comes on in conjunction with the aircon it comes on when you drop into neutral.

I used to get the aux fan kicking in a lot but since I've fitted the JapSpeed radiator it's never needed to come on again (including travelling from Gloucestershire to Northamptonshire yesterday with the aircon on and 35 degree ambient temp).

Hi Gary,

Just checked the water level and all is good.

I am running with the original expansion setup and the pressure is good also.

Hi Dan,

I am hoping it is just a one off situation also, I will keep an eye/ear out for it during the next few days.

Thanks Stephen,

I wish I had connected DataScan and checked the temperature readings. I will next time.

There did seem to be a connection with the aircon though. I think if I ran auto, the fan would run. if I ran in "eco" setting or "off" setting the fan would stop.

Well I think that was the combination. I can't remeber exactly as I was keen to park up and cool her down.

Cheers ZXTT,

As you say, maybe mine was just passed the temperature threshold, it was exceptional conditions, and I was in slow traffic a lot of my journey.

There was a post recently, I think by Gio which included another scenario that was reaching a certain temp at low speed, 24c rings a bell

Unless it is actually overheating (high temp gauge reading) and/or losing coolant, then don't worry about the aux fan. With ambient temperatures in the 30s and the AC running, the aux fan will cut in. It needs to, to help keep the AC gas cool, thus keep you cool inside the car:wink:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Thanks Richard.

Sounds good to me. :thumbup1:

For Non Turbo & Turbo Z32's, if the air conditioner is OFF - The radiator fan is OFF if the coolant temperature is 104 deg C or less & ON if the engine temperature is 105 deg C or more.

If the air conditioner is ON -

For a Non Turbo, if the vehicle speed is BELOW 39kmh & the coolant temperature is BELOW 94 deg C, the fan is OFF.

If the coolant temperature is ABOVE 95 deg C, the fan is ON (High speed).

If the vehicle speed is ABOVE 40kmh & the coolant temperature is BELOW 104 deg C, the fan is OFF, once the coolant temperature reaches 105 deg C the fan is ON (High speed).

A Twin Turbo is a little different, if the vehicle speed is BELOW 39kmh & the coolant temperature is BELOW 89 deg C, the fan is OFF.

If the coolant temperature is BETWEEN 90 to 99 deg C, the fan is ON at LOW speed.

If the coolant temperature is ABOVE 100 deg C, the fan is ON at HIGH speed.

At a speed ABOVE 40kmh, the fan will be OFF if the coolant temperature is BELOW 104 deg C & ON at HIGH speed if the temperature is ABOVE 105 deg C.

Thanks Twin Turbo,

Very reasuring breakdown of the conditions that call upon the fan to opperate.

Sounds like mine was only doing what it should do. Cheers. :thumbup1:
