i'm looking at converting the zed to electric cooling fan rather than the viscous unit, i've found a package for around £80, it includes a 38mm top hose adpator with the temp controller in, and a 14" fan (i have the upgraded alloy rad) the kit however only does 2 temp ranges so not sure if either are suitable for the zed it run either at 87 degs on 83 degs off or 92 degs on and 87 degs off would either of the ranges suit the zed?

other issue relates to the seat belt series 1 j-spec type when driving i notice the belt is going loose, it's not on the top mount causing this, if i tug on the belt twice just above where is come out of the door card it pulls tight again, was there a fix for that somewhere?

final issue since lowering the car i've got the tailgate knocking when i hot deeper pot holes, i've checked the latch and that is on maximum adjustment downwards are there any other adjustments to try and tighten it up slightly?

Can of worms, but I have yet to see an electric fan that can keep a Zed's engine cool(ish), especially on hot days or during "spirited" driving

if you have completely removed the aircon system (and the condensor in front of the radiator) you can give the electric fan system a try, but otherwise it's best is to stick with the viscous fan (imo)

If you have a japanese imort then the loose belt is probably caused by the retraction stopper in the mechanism and it actually is supposed to do that.

the retraction stopper is activated as soon as you clip in the belt and is deactivated again when unclipping the belt.

To see if that's causing your loose belt issue , unclip the belt while holding it in place and see if it retracts and pulls tight again.

the tailgate knocking problem: do you still have the 2 rubber stoppers on the tailgate ?

if they are missing, then that's the cause of your knocking problem..if they are still there, you can try to put some extra material on the stoppers, so it holds the tailgate in place/position better.

At that price its unlikely to have anything like the cooling capacity required for your car. Especially if you still have the aircon rad in place.

cheers guys was looking at an electric fan as i don't think my viscous unit is working correctly and as i have the uprated alloy rad with the fan shroud kind of mounted on there, but as it dosen't fit the rad correctly it is a little ugly looking, the kit i looked at was for a land rover which from experiance runs hotter than the zed but still looking at options, zed centre do one for the uprated rad at £120plus vat or £180 plus vat with brackets.

the seat belt does kind of retract when i unclip it but not fully almost as though the spring hasn't got enough tension, it will wind in slowly but i need to feed the belt into the roll to help it along.

i have both rubber stops on the tailgate, not sure if i removed the internal weight or not, it only knocks on deeper pot holes, but i will try the 'extra' material method i think i have an old tyre inner tube around so could glue an extra piece of rubber to the bottom of the stops and try that

An advert extolling the virtues with vague references to rally teams top this best that.. etc but failing to mention the two facts you really need to know.

How many CFMs and what current it draws.

also full of get out clauses ... it isnt powerful enough to use with stock rad

Not powerful enough to use with FMIC .

This has been discussed before and I think you need a fan with around 4000 CFM to be of any good with a TT engine.

Im sure one of the "OEM" experts will be along to tell us the capacity of the stock viscous. I know its impressive

Cheers Pete helpful as always I'll price up a replacement viscous fan compared to a electric fan around 4000 cfm

Viscous fan IS good, however if you wanted a good powerful electric fan, you need to get something from an OEM. Something the Americans do is fit the e-fan from a Ford F150.

The stuff you can get on eBay and most other outlets in this country generally is only catering to the 4-cylinder FWD market.

Personally, I'd leave it as it is. No point in getting an eFan 'just because you can'.

Jaffa has an eFan...well, 2 of them and a radiator in the rear the size of Newport Pagnell!!

Thought I might share my experience on this topis.

Electric cooling fan on a 300zx sounds like a brilliant idea, why not as most high performance turbo cars have them. The thing is there are countless guys who have tried and failed. I decided to give it a try and fitted a large generic cheap 16" electric fan onto a fibre glass radiator shroud I made which was fitted to my large aluminium aftermarket radiator. What a disaster as the car temp ( digital temp gauge) rose very fast to hot within the first 10 mins with the fan running almost continuously from cold in a typical South African day with average temps of 25-28 degrees C. I binned that and realised that I needed a fan with higher specs and importing the Taurus Fan as Funkysi stated was too much.

I decided to use a fan from a Volvo S60 and used a large relay that was rated at 80Amps dc over the contacts and fitted into a custom fibre glass shroud covering the entire radiator. It is controlled with a cheap radiator fan controller unit I got off ebay which you can set the fan to come on from any temp you select and when that set temp is reached and the fan switches on the display flashes. The nice thing about this unit is you can see what the water temp is, when the fan is running as the temp value displayed flashes and also see the temp drop as its cooling and when the flashing stops you know the fan is off.

This set up works very well in traffic on a hot South African day and the temp drop variation from when fan starts to when fan switches off is 5 degrees C and this drop is over a 30 to 40 second period. This has been tested at a few different settings for fan to switch on at 75, 80, 85 and 90 degree C and have settled on switching on at 85.

The temps at cruising speeds of 120 km/h is that the fan switches on and off as in traffic conditions which is not good as the fan should not operate at all. This is due to the fact that the fan aperture at cruising speeds is a restrictor for the incoming air and I have to now fit ports with one-way flaps into the shroud to allow more air in to pass through the radiator. Once I have done that I will report back with the results. The benefits so far is no drag from an engaged viscous fan, no whooshing fan noise and less stress on the water pump.

Type 300zx electric fan conversion into google, you will get loads of results. Do your research and it will be fine. The kit from Zcentre isn't big enough as said, the volvo and ford fans are virtually the same, although that's well known now so find either is becoming harder. I did start looking into it but decided I had more important things to sort. The stock system works very well, when it's working. That means viscous, rad and shroud. Too many bin the shroud and get poor cooling or have a bum viscous.

cheers guys, i have found a zirgo fan which is 3630cfm, but the kit isn't cheap it's 374 dollars plus shipping and import tax, then i would need a shroud which ash spec do one to fit for 135 dollars plus shipping & tax, definately not a cheap fix, but if my vicous fan is goosed i've been quoted circa £300 for a new unit, no point messing around fitting a used one. so prob very close price wise. more research needed on this i think

Speak to Mike @ MJP as he has the OEM Viscous fan and a pattern part which is a fraction of the OEM cost, which he recommends as well. I went with the pattern part and have had no problems with it, obviously looks very similar as well.
