I have had a good google but haven't found what I need. My gearbox is annoying me now, it is holding the car back, it hasn't "gone" but it is going. You can't rush it, I realised I have come to drive around the gearbox, Sarah doesn't want to be doing all double clutch revmatch downshifts so it needs sorting.

A new 98 spec box is $1800 from the states, too much and I can only imagine the shipping costs.

I would rather rebuild mine, the kits are cheap but I want to know if I can build my box up to 98 spec?

Are there other options? I haven't found any, do supra boxes fit or similar? Obviously with modifications.

I don't know quite how to sort this one.

Thanks guys.

CZP haven't replied but that is a last resort anyway. I spoke to 2 companies about refurbishment and one said "give us your vin number the labour will be £300." The other was a true gent. He spoke to me for 30 minutes and we discussed all sorts.

A 5 speed refurb would be £240+VAT. Labour would be £60 an hour and he expected a couple of hours each end to get the box on and off if I want a drive in drive out service.

We spoke about oil and shifters, treatments and uprating. Basically, he doesn't rate redline MT90 like the rest of the internet seems to. He said it's too thick and isn't appropriate. He said quick shifters are the devils work, (Si I always knew you were probably right and mine came with the car) that cryo and shot peening services are £450 each. They will put 20% life extension on a gearset, but that could be a week on an old box or 2 years on a new one. Also he said you don't get increased power transmission or shift speed or anything.

All in all top bloke called Bernie at Gearbox man, so step one, some gearbox oil and a long shift. I'm gonna go and google long shifts but has anyone got one here?

Tom, ditch that shifter ASAP. It makes the gearbox feel pretty lousy. I've driven enough Z32s with quick shift and they ruin the feel of the gearbox. See how you get on with that. Unless your box is grinding into gear or wining, it's probably ok. I'd replace that shifter and rejoice in nice smooth gear change.

The stock shifter has a slightly longer throw, but it's still a relatively short throw. Unless you're using your car competitively, they're about as much use as a chocolate teapot. New bushes and a stock gearknob make it all feel smooth and nicely weighted.

Tom, what's done/replaced for the £240? Did Bernie recommend an oil to use?

He said his ethos is to start with a post mortem, as he called it, look at what hardware could be reused with a view to save as much as he could, then change software, such as synchros and bearings. His terminology not mine. From there aditional costs would come from needing new gearsets etc. So I spose he meant its a flat 240, then whatever it needs in parts to get it tickedy boo.

He said Nissan spent a lot of time getting their oil recommendation right, use that. He kept using redline 90/shockproof as an example of the root of a gearboxes problems. So he said ise the stock Nissan reccomended oil, and to go thinner rather than thicker.

I put redline MT90 in about 18months ago. The clutch system has just been bled and te bite is "a bit low" but still one inch up from the bottom. It engages all gear well stationary. Just can not be rushed while driving.

I just called my local Nissan dealer and they said from what they can see for vehicles that age they only really do two gearbox oils, one is a sports and off-road oil which is 75/85.

Cost for 3 litres is £45.61 (3x1litre tubs)

Can anyone confirm this? Also it's 2.8 litres for a gearbox without cooler right?

I can't find the parts I need inside the UK. I need

That

And that?https://conceptzperformance.com/Cart/description.php?II=2664

Anything else?

Pretty sure that's it, however I can't remember exactly what is removed when doing a quick shift conversion. There are a few bushes that you'll need too.

Have a look on http://www.nissan4u.com and see what parts you're missing based on what you already have. Give those part numbers to MJP to see what he can get.
