Seems to be one thing after another at the moment my problem now is lifter rattle. Sounds to me like the drivers rear lifter is tapping pretty loud it started when I drive her to Liverpool earlier this week .

So I've got back and done a flush and oil change but it's made no difference so I may do another flush as the oil was manky. Can someone confirm the oil as I'm using 5w30 Mobil super 3000. Also any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I personally like to use ZX1 as well, I know that others don't condone the use of additives in oil but ive used it for years in nearly all my cars and found it does quieten things somewhat and at £25 ish its not too expensive either

Ian do you know anyone close to Lancaster that could have a look at the lifters I haven't time to do it myself and I don't trust the local garages

How long have you been using 5W-30 for? It's too thin, both when cold & especially when hot in a VG30DETT.

I have had brilliant results with HKS 10W-45. The oil is made by Idemitsu and one I recommend.

It ran on that oil for about 30 minutes I dont know what was in it before that all I know is it was mankey lol

I've just put 10w40 in after another flush still tapping mind

Just watched the vid, wow that it loud mate sounds like a diesel taxi.

Nearest guy to you I trust is Lee Dent. 2.5 hours from you at least.

What's your oil pressure like?

Oil pressure is fine.. when warm about 30 60 when cold never bottoms out or anything it is loud chap sounds bloody awful it was lovely and smooth on the way to Liverpool too just as I pulled up sounded grim

I think that sounds more serious than lifter rattle, i had a similar noise then worse on my NA after oil starvation to one of the heads, but having checked the heads, it seems the bag of spanners was coming from the block.

I hope its not as bad, but i guess change the oil first and see if its any better, fingers crossed for you

Tbh it does sound a lot worse on that video it's 100% top end I've had a bar all over the top end listening and is drivers rear top cam where the noise is and it's more tick than clunk lol.

I've done 2 oil changes with a flush on each I'll throw in some wynn's lifter treatment to see if it free's it up but failing that I'm sure it's lifters at fault shame there's no one up here that could have a look I just need it sorting really it's my daily and the amount I'm having to mess with it I may have to look at something newer :(

The ticking gets faster and a little louder but I've thrown a rod on an rb engine and it sounded nothing like this

Tbh I love the car but as much as I love it I've stuck it on ebay to gauge interest. I use this as a daily driver and I can't afford it letting me down so if it goes it goes.

8 months for me to keep a car is good but I'm feeling it's time for a change really I need something more practical for work which is a sad truth. I have been known to change my mind though lol

I've just got home after picking my little boy up and everytime I drive the car I have a huge grin. It's a great car but I need to be sensible.... I might just buy a sensible one too lol or a 350z

  • Author

Well cars going to be moving to its new owner tomorrow tappets are getting better so I'm sure after a while it will be back to sounding smooth again....

Some final pictures of her as she goes

I've loved my zx ownership time and I'm sure I will be back either with another in the future or with a 350z

that is Defo an Oil Starvation to one of the Heads .. Normally the Passenger side but had odd one or 2 with Drivers side doing the same ..

the Problem is Not the Head but more of the Check valve with in the main block

Due to Carbon build up in the oil gallery's

Yes - and no. A "30" grade is indeed too thin for a VG30DETT; you need a minimum "40" grade. Oilman has posted on this many times, the "w" number is the ability to circulate quickly when cold; the lower the number the quicker it gets round the engine in colder conditions. So it's not necessarily detrimental to use a 5w40 over a 10w40 - however in the UK, our winters do not get cold enough to necessitate lower than a 10w. But since many decent synthetic oils tend to be 5w40, you can safely use that with confidence too.

The higher number (the "40" bit) is the oil's ability to resist shearing at high temperatures - and the VG30DETT does get hot; so NEVER use less than a "40" grade!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

The relationship between kinematic viscosity and temperature varies at all temperatures when comparing a 5W30 with a 5W40, let alone a 10W40 or 10W50. There are not just two points on a graph at 40°C & 100°C to consider.

A 5w30 oil is too thin for a 25yr old VG (and most other 25yr old JDM engines) in the UK, which was the specific oil viscosity mentioned in the thread.
