Checked the history file of K291BOM and the last belt was put on by Jeff at Zed World on the 16/01/04 with 45000 miles it now has 65000 miles. So 20000 miles and 11 years later it is having its third belt.

Wow! I bought mine with 45'000 on it, it has 79'500 on it now! I just bought a cake and 80'000 candles In anticipation for my drive to Snowdon on friday!

Do cam belts really regrade over years if the belt has only done 20k surely it must still be ok .

Recommended every 5 years or 60k miles which ever comes first. Rubber does deteriorate over time and as its a big part of the engines running, worth while changing for peace of mind. Belt is about £45 and if you fit it yourself your looking at a few hours work :thumbup1:

No doubt most manufacturers over egg the importance within those time/mile frames, some cars can last their lifetime on the same belt, but its not worth the risk IMO

It depends on the environment mainly. Rubber degrades, as do all oil based products, they all have a finite lifespan. Jimmer did my cam belt last weekend for my peace-of-mind and it was originally fitted 8 years ago when he built my engine. He took off my old one (my Z has done 20k since he built it) and the belt was actually in fine condition, but we decided to replace it anyway.

My car however is never driven in the winter or in wet weather and it dry-stored in a doubled-skinned integral garage, so any of the rubbers on the car have had the most minimal of exposure to the elements which is why my old cam belt still looked pretty new. We replaced the top roller, but everything else felt tight.

Cars that are left out in the open and driven in all seals will have definitely seen their belts and rubbers degrade and significantly more.

I will take some pics of my old belt when it comes of but I expect it to be ok. My main reason for the work is because there is a whining noise from one of the pully's so all three are being replaced.
