Morning all, does anyone know if the steering column size and splines are the same on airbag and non airbag versions? My zed is non cruise, non hicas, with airbag, my local momo supplier only lists non airbag fitment. not bothered about the electrical side of things just the actual fitment to the column.

thanks.

Momo offer 2 types of boss I believe, but that's due to HICAS. Any 300zx boss, 'should' fit.

When i fitted a boss to replace my airbag wheel, it didnt fit. Once the wheel comes off you are left with yellow sticker on a unit with a coil of ribbon cable inside. Clamping the boss to this stopped the wheel self centreing. I bodged it by removing the unit at which point the boss fitted fine, but i had no horn cable to the wheel, so fitted a horn switch on the dash.

I know other people had no problem, so presumably there are different types

As it turns out, the only boss listed for a 300zx by momo is for non airbag vehicles. now the boss does fit the splines correctly, but you have to remove the ribbon cassette to enable the boss to seat correctly onto the shaft.

Now then, I believe the shaft is longer on airbag equipped cars as once fitted the boss sits too far away from the top column bearing and the lugs to cancel indicators don't reach the indicator stalk.

I think the only option is to fit a non airbag column, with a non cruise non hicas cassette at the top of the column with the sprung loaded pin for the horn.

Also I think maybe the opening around the cowl is different on airbag cars as there are lots of cutouts for the wiring multi plugs etc.

physically the boss would fit and work fine, but it wouldn't be totally correct as there would be no horn on the steering wheel, a large gap between the boss and the cowl. It just wouldn't sit right with me.

You are correct concerning the clock spring having to be changed from the airbag to non-airbag type.

The steering columns are the same length, so you don't need to change it.

The cover pieces between the steering wheel & dash are different between the airbag & non-airbag models, that's why there would be a gap.

The rear of the steering wheels are also different between airbag & non-airbag models, that's why they have the two types of covers.

Not having to swap columns would be great, I'll get a non airbag setup tomorrow from a local scrapper and hopefully it will all fit nice.
