Hi All,

Just thought I'd say hi!

Got my 1st 300zx tt (auto) about 4 weeks ago now, really love it as it has been a dream car since I first saw one when I was 10 years old lol! The car is beautiful and it turn so many heads.

It has however a couple of issues I wondered if anyone can help with:

When the weather is dry, the car runs perfect.... when it is damp, tbh its awful! When its damp, it idles at around 1500rpm and changes gears randomly and irratically. I have completed the auto diagnostic check which I found online and it came up with the throttle position sensor. Only issue I've got is I can't find a garage willing to work on the car in the local area to check this!

Does anyone know any good garages near Chorley / Preston / Bolton / Wigan that could help fix up the car and also give it a good check over? (There is also a slight vibration through the steering wheel when on the motorway so want this checking out aswell)

Any help would be great!

Yes the power light flashes once if its working ok, and if not it flashes about 10-15 times I think

Absolutely go back to a stock nose panel without the vents, that should cure your damp weather issues assuming your filters aren't still exposed. As for the Throttle Position Sensor fault, this will also quite likely be causing some issues for you. If there is a fault with the TPS, setting it up correctly will possibly transform the way your car feels to drive, particularly being an auto as the autobox relies on information from this to decide on shifting points. Does it feel like it hangs in a gear for too long before changing at times, or maybe feels unresponsive or delayed when you kick down?

I would also advise getting the car to a reputable company such as Lee Dent to get the car properly setup with a clean bill of health. He Could probably diagnose the cause of the vibrations fairly quickly.

Hi, yes it does hang in the gears too long (when the problem is occuring - it doesn't do it all the time) I think the car was in storage for about 6months before I bought it. When it is running rough though, if you floor the throttle it changes up ok (ish) its mainly when the car is changing up from 1st to 2nd at normal speeds it revs up quite high and then jerks into 2nd... after that it can't seem to figure out which gear it should be in and changes up & down randomly.

I'll check the filter tonight when I get home though, would a wet air filter affect the tps though?

The wet air filter would be a different fault mate but it's sometimes a bit trial and error. It's normally the bit the air filter bolts onto (MAF), if the wire in it gets wet, caused poor running. Quite a few take it off and dry it out in the house

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

mark at Automodz isn't a million miles from you in Nottingham either, (mark derby on this forum)... great fella, great labour charges and his work is superb..

cutty

Car been stood for months, i would be checking the connectors everywhere for green corrosion, including the TPS plug.

Morning all.... I had a look at the MAF and the air filters. The Air filter has defo seen better days! Its non standard and looks pretty old.... Does anyone / Can anyone sell me the parts I will need to convert it back to standard? (Air box etc)

Done, I was pretty shocked when I saw it tbh... when you touch them they literally crumble in your hands!

Still going to get it into one of the garages soon though:wacko:

The standard airboxes are pretty restrictive, are you sure you wouldn't just want to get a replacement cone filter? A'pexi manufacture the best our cars can get.

My only concern is that they sit quite low and are prob open to getting wet/damp easy. Will the A'pexi manufacture fit onto the standard fittings? Also, forgive me if I'm being dumb here but does it really need 2 or should it be converted back to 1?

Unless you have a larger/dual intake housing, then no, a single filter should be fine. If you have dual MAF (ie, a Selin translator) then you're reducing restriction. The A'pexi filter for the 300zx bolts to the factory holes on the MAF - no modification is required.

I've never experienced issued with it not running well in wet weather....as I never drive it in wet weather or the winter lol. You can make a deflector which would stop most of the ingress. The filter sits quite high up anyway behind the nose panel and you'd only really have issues with large volumes of water.

Just loads of surplus pipes and things once all my work had been done, don't worry!
