Eh? My explanation was better. :D

Your explanation didn't say anything about some converters clamping the signal once above 110mph. That could be why some people don't spot a difference in steering assistance before and after. But chips can fail, and the UK clocks are the best option.

I never heard of a chip that clamps the signal once above 110mph, like as said the 'usual' common chip is simply a signal reducer, nothing more, certainly nothing smart just very basic electronics. You may know of another device?

Many people wont notice a difference because these devices are fitted to the cluster by the importer before they buy the car and subsequent owners certainly won't have a clue.

On my first Zed, I bought direct from the importer it had already been fitted along with fog light modification, but I always thought the steering felt too light especially at motorway speed, well obviously at 70mph, the convertor was fooling the ECU into thinking it was travelling slower where lighter steering is required. I then read about this not so well known side effect and changed it out for a UK cluster. The change isn't dramatic but it is noticeable.

Yep, the traditional ones are simply four wire chips. The five wire ones have an output signal for the car which stays unaltered until it reaches 110mph, and then gets clamped there whenever you're actually going over that.

And yes, most importers just convert the speedo the cheapest way they can before selling the car. A four wire converter chip is normally their cheapest option. But on these cars as you know, as well as some skylines and some 200sx models, the speed sensitive power steering isn't even the main problem, it's the fact that it alters when the hicas tries to do it's thing.

On the skyline you can actually convert a Japanese speedo into a UK one by removing one of the jumpers alter the signal to the odometer, and then adjusting calibration pads on the back of the board to change sweep. Can't say I've looked into doing this on a zed though since mine already has UK clocks, and no hicas anyway due to the NA back end, so it's not as important in my case.

Still looking for a set for a 1990 TT Fairlady (series 1?)...if anyone has themavailable?!

Just for information purposes, if you are looking for UK cluster primarily just so you've got the UK clock face and obviously the removal of convertor and its potential issues then it is possible to get a series 2 cluster and simply open it up, remove the actual speed section (and boost if you prefer that scale) and transfer it into your JSPEC series 1 cluster. It really isn't hard, the dials within the cluster are plug and play between S1 & S2 its just the connection difference at the back of the whole cluster that's different.

I know this all to be true because I did it on my 1st Zed. The only tool required is a baby cross head screwdriver and a little patience.
