Weight saving on a zed

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone knows how much weight can be taken out of a zed? Since I'm considering an NA instead of a TT at the moment, are they much lighter? I know they don't have hicas for example, but is the r230 diff much heavier than the r200 diff? Did the TT get any additional chassis stiffening? And so on.

Has anyone compiled a list on here somewhere of what things weigh? Also, are there any chassis repair manuals floating around online which could help me find out which bits aren't structural, etc?

I've had an idea Mr Fish!

I am putting my TT engine & setup along with some extra PowerZed goodies into my freshly-acquired SWB, which will leave me with a black NA manual LWB :D

Here's a great idea.....save up for a nice one! Why are you in such a rush to get an old turd to fix up, or spent ages doing a TT conversion? Save some pennies for god sake! :)

I'm with you Si. If I want something I save for it. Trouble is currently it's a new roof and a new boiler. Not a zed

Seems that saving is old school though.

Well....the guy moans about not having the budget for what he wants.....but really, the best option is just to wait a while until he had got the budget. Maybe I'm missing something, but this 'going round the mulberry bush' seems like a waste of time?

Save another £1k-£2k and you'll find something that you actually want...or at least something to start with.

There are different ways to arrive at the car you wish to own. It doesn't have to be a case of "wait until the right one comes up", just the same as you don't need to buy an NA and do a TT swap. I bought my first Zed simply because it was available and it was an itch to scratch. I only ended up with that particular car because the seller wanted my £440 Forester SF5 as a straight swap and agreed to drive it down from Glasgow to Newcastle where I was buying a TT Soarer which lasted all of 3 months in the stable.

I agree with that Noel....but it's clear the OP hasn't got the funds for what he wants and is trying everything to get to that situation whereas, there's a much simpler route? :)

He can have my LWB Zed! Reckon I could even have it TT'd within his budget!

Maybe he should complete that task first then.

Could take months for me to get everything shifted though, so like I say if I can get a decent base car now, as I sell more stuff I can put the money in the pot for the conversion. That way, I can still drive something half decent while I wait.

Cool, keep me posted. You're keeping that swb I found you for yourself then?

Other thing you might want to consider is that the insurance companies will most likely class the conversion as a modification which in turn puts the prices up and will be a buyers consideration in the future when/if you come to sell the car.

Personally I recon you should just wait and get a nice TT

Bird raises a valid point here, in fact. I imagine a lot of insurance companies (even specialist ones) would class a non-factory turbo conversion (done on a driveway and not by any kind of registered mechanic or specialist) as quite a high-loading situation!

So that'd negate any saving that may have been made by buying an NA.

I reckon that, unless Noel is able to sort something out regarding his LWB or unless a cheap diamond appears in the meantime, you're simply going to have to get saving!

I was until about 3 minutes ago when I had another idea. The underside & turrets are like new, shell is minty mint!

Just another thought - what about looking out for a good TT rolling shell then just dropping a good engine etc in?

That's something else I'd consider, yeah. That's why I was so gutted to lose out on that other one on the weekend, as if I found that engine was stuffed I could have simply dropped a replacement engine in, and salvaged/sold whatever bits were worth keeping from the old one. Oh well.
