Hi all, some of you know of me already, Adam-Murse and Coldel to mention a couple, but I'm a skyline gtst owner considering trying a z32 300zx.

I've had my skyline for nearly 5 years now, bought as I used to have an mr2 turbo but needed rear seats when we started having kids. The skyline was intended to give me something fun that I could still enjoy, but I've never had the budget to make it particularly quick. I've been considering a change for a while now, and the car had been absolutely faultless throughout, until the head gasket popped last weekend. Not bad for a 22 year old car with 107,000 miles on it I guess, but now I can't decide whether to fix it or use it as the push I needed to try something else. So here I am.

I need to try one to see if I can get my kids in the back, but the only other must is that it's a TT. I've been offered 2.5k for the skyline as is with it's blown gasket, so that'd be my budget roughly.

I assume for that I'll likely be finding autos, but will be looking at converting it to manual ASAP. Is the non turbo gearbox strong enough for a modified vg30dett that'd probably be upped to the 450-500bhp region? I assume the non turbo box would be cheaper to buy. Also, did any late spec z32's get a 6 speed at all?

Anyway, thought I'd say hello. I may be asking more questions on here while I make my mind up whether to make the jump or not. :)

Im no knowledge guru but with your budget yes your likely looking at Auto's if the bodywork is reasonable.

Regarding the manual box they are all the same except for the bellhousing. The bellhousing has casting marks on the N/a that the TT does not have and they have to be ground down to fit over a TT flywheel (simple job)

Also with the stock z32 transmission there are only 5 speeds and there are people on here using them with over 600 ponies at the wheels, so they are pretty sturdy.

Stuart!

I have heard box conversion kicking about the £800 mark - mind you went out for a drive in Gio's auto NA a month or so ago and it wasnt too bad - although I will always be wedded to that manual shifting - pretty sure you could live with it in the short term.

Sorry to hear about the Skyline mate, was a very nice car and will make a good project for the next owner.

Cheers guys! Those of you that have driven/owned gtst's before, how does a z32 compare? I know the later ones share the same hicas system as the gtst, and the engine responds to basic mods far better, but other than that I don't know much about them other than they got good reviews in their time.

I've driven & mapped lots of GTSTs & Z32s. Never really thought to compare them, always found the GTST to be a bit boring in all honesty.

Me too, hence why I'm wanting to make sure a fast z32 isn't. :)

They're not. More lbft than bhp up to around 450bhp, equal at 500bhp on a well set up car. Saying that, mapped one the other week with 570bhp & 577lbft.

I've had a couple of GTSTs and the best thing about them is the noise that the RB25 makes. The Z is nicer to drive and feels more like a sports car.

Must admit the noise is about the only thing I liked too. It's not a bad car by any means, but just doesn't do it for me if you know what I mean. Really want to drive a z32 to see if I'd prefer one. Any offers? :D

I would gladly offer u to drive mine as any genuine person wanting a drive!

Geographicly as I live in Folkestone , unless u want a weekend away :)

I don't suppose there is anyone in the Newcastle area with one that I could take a look at, we're up that way today anyway?
