just wondering at what power level does a 300zx become just to much for the public road as in its just not usable on the street just wondering what people think

Depends on many factors I think Manual or auto etc I remember seeing film of the porch 917s being driven on public roads from their garage to the Le man's track in the 70's and They were about a 1000 hp

Unless you have a quality TC setup, I'd say 500-600bhp is most useable IMO and even that is big power. Anything over is just for blagging rights/track or circuit use really. I've been in a 750hp Z in the US and it was spinning in 5th gear. It was awesome/insane but was mostly a track car and dyno Queen, but still...there becomes a point where 2wd and older chassis setup just can't cope with that sort of power on the street, it becomes a waste of time.

I ask as am just unsure how far to do what ever I did I will be fitting TC deffo, I cant make me mind up I don't want to go to far were I just cant use the thing on the road. spinning in 5th mite be a step to far. 600 at the wheels should be plenty then

it's more about the power delivery, a spiky car is miserable to drive on the road. If you have a responsive car and broad power band, then it's fine. This also helps in terms of traction. You should get full traction in 3rd at least. 2nd gear with decent tires :)

I was happy driving mine on the road, the only danger is speed limits and how slow all the other cars are going in comparison.

You need to think about what your aims are? Doing for the hell of it? Track? Drag?

doing if for the hell of it really. I was thinking about 650 at the wheels but mite to rubbish to drive on the road I just want to build the most powerful car I have ever had but don't want to spoil it by going to far.

ok, 650 at the wheels is a lot, but if you focus on early spool and decent power band it's perfectly fine on the road. Try getting passenger rides with people at various levels / turbo setups to get a feel for what you want. Some people love big turbo nothing then everything delivery for instance, others hate it.

what turbo would you recommend looking maybe gt600r or the gt555r . with a 3 inch system rite throw and 2.5 intake duel maffs not sure what cams to use. what head work

have a look at the dyno thread to see what people have achieved on what setups

had a looks on the leader board its a bit mixed up there is a gut there making more power with small turbos and stock head cams then a guy with bigger turbos more aggressive cams so little bit confusing

Where? happy to discuss and give my opinion. My point being is that other than Bob & myself, no one else is remotely close to 650 at the wheels. Among the next band of 450-600 flywheel there are different combinations with varying graphs ie power/torque bands

do you think 550 to 600 at the wheels mite be more realistic if you was building at car now to that power what turbos part ect would you use ?

"at what power level is to much for the road?"

The level at which the performance of the car exceeds the ability of the driver to control it safely.

This....

But back to your question - no amount of power is really too much; providing you can actually take safe advantage of it. What I mean by that is, is a 600bhp 300zx really going to be more "useful" than a 500bhp 300zx? Given the cost involved, the age of the car, the actual on-road performance, etc etc; I'd say most probably not.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I recon 450 to 500 at the wheels is more realistic without trying to spend big money

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

500 at the wheels still isn't going to be cheap is it. would it really cost that much more to go to 600?

I think so yes. For example, ID sit high on the leader board if I decided to put my results up but I dare say there's a huge difference in my car to both bob genie and Jaffa, both of those cars are miles ahead of the pack over here in the UK. The only other I can think of that would have been next to them would be MAC1's car but we never ever saw any dyno results but having been in that car a couple of times, dam it was powerful.

don't be shy, stick a chart up and I'll add it :)

why dont you do something different?

Maybe...Twin charge? The evo's now have an off the shelf kit for this.

it'll be pretty nuts.

I'll see what it makes the next time I get on the dyno as the last time, the timing wasn't right (drifting) and the boost controller wasn't working so Noel couldn't turn up the boost. But - Based on the figures it made, I'd be in 3rd place I believe, only just though.

what set up are you running then ?

I don't have the spec list to hand to as a general 'what I have' thing:

Wiseco Pistons

Eagle Rods

Greddy TD05 16G turbos

Pentroof style tubular manifolds

External Wastegates and Screamer pipes

740cc Nismo Injectors

Splitfire Coilpacks

Veilside Evolution exhaust

PACE side mount intercoolers

Koyo Radiator

Southbend Clutch

RPS Segmented flywheel

AMS Underwrive Pulley

Apexi Air Filter

And I can't remember the rest off the top of my head.

that's the turbo threshold on the Greddy TD05 16G turbos ie when the power comes on ? what z1 turbos do the compere to ?

I don't really know much of the technical data behind stuff but they come in around 3500 revs or there abouts. I wouldn't know how they compare to others either mate - Sorry. As for there top end, I believe one of Bobgenies results are with a very similar set up
