This might be something for phutumusch.....

I've been looking through various Nissan and Infiniti interiors. This was actually prompted my a friend of mine in Los Angeles. I came across the e/w switches from the P11 Primera which are identical. (See both photos.)

I don't know what the situation is with the wiring, but I am sure they can be modified to fit physically and electronically. I believe these are already pre-illuminated too. The bases would need to be split, hopefully that split chassis would mount up beneath a stock Z32 finishers. Z32-Zone do an adaptor harness, but not entirely sure whether some loom from a Primera can be spliced into the existing harness in the doors.

Just some thoughts for those that might want to try it....myself included!

The issue would be the finisher....whether that could be modified...

I kind of like the idea of being different with these - but - I'm not convinced they look better than the earlier stock ones. Look close the the 99 spec though

I think it's more the feel. I much prefer more modern toggle style switches. They're illuminated too.

But you can do ours si image.jpg

I know, those are back-lit, not illuminated. ;)

I'm being retentive now...but I think the illumination is a little nicer on the later stuff rather than the retro-fit backlighting on the earlier switches.

:slap: but thay do look good though when thay done right you got too admit

Hi Ted I like the look of that!

Hows it wired & method?

Groover the lad that did mine for me

I have to agree with Lee in post 2, when you get one without any wear and back light it, then get the bulb working for the red in my case's arrow, don't think it can be beat imo.

DSC03565.jpg

Ok, how did you get the arrow to light up...?!

There's a stock bulb holder for it and that alone, so on the loom there's a 'lights on' feed and it's on this the blue back light strip is spliced.

I am aware that not all switch assemblies have the bulb holder, so yours may be one of these ?

Just like to add that it is only red because i have used a red led bulb, originally it would of been clear with perhaps a green rubber johnny on it !!

Think it's one of those wedge T5 bulbs from memory - like the ones in the pods.

So that suggests that the foremost arrow isn't painted on... I need to have a look at all the switches I have stockpiled here, I think!

Not painted no.

The bulb i used iirc is like this a 'tall' one, not sure if it's a T4 base 100% though without checking.

forgot linky !!

The series 2 switches iirc have the illumination, standard though you would hardly notice it, its not until you stick an led in there it really pops

Also having had some experience with the 99 spec switches, its not just a case of plug and play:nono: you will need a couple of relays and change the wiring slightly on the supplied loom for it to work, i have a pic and diagram that Jeff sent me after he worked it out.

Yes deffo not as straight forward, lol after buying brand new 99 spec switches and carbon surrounds and even an adapter loom for it. Does look the mutts nuts tho!

I added the later model switches to my American Z32 recently. Full details at my link below but basically a little more work for me as I have LHD. Quick info: between 97-00 models they have very similar switches. In fact the passenger side switch is the same. Drivers side looks the same but carries two different part numbers, 97-98 and 99-00. The difference, the 99-00 takes a lot more parts and money to use in a 96 and down model. The 99-00 switch has an second plug on it for the additional use of "pinch protection". But to use this feature you also need the 99-00 regulator/motor and pw amp...extremely costly pieces. In fact you can't even make the 99-00 switch work without the other parts. I chose to go with the 97-98 drivers switch. It looks identical and works nearly the same with the exception of not having pinch protection. Similar to USDM Z32's it has Auto down but it also has Auto Up, something USDM models never got. I've heard from some that JDM cars had both even on the earlier switches but nevertheless the redesigned look of the switches helps update the car in my opinion.

Cheers Greg! Good work. Thanks for the headsup on facebook too! :)

Thanks for the link and nice workmanship! Did you get your UK/Euro oil cooler done?

I did - it is also on my website/blog if you want to search for it. I also recently picked up a the Euro mounting plate, bar bracket/brace and the oil cooler hoses - used of course as these parts are no longer available and have been for a while now. Just haven't installed them yet. Looking into the oem return hose it appears the euro spec did not have the restrictor inside the hose as the USDM and JDM models do. Before I got this hose I transferred it to the new hoses that were supplied with the kit. If I can get some more confirmation from others here that the Euro spec hose did not have it that would be great.

I also finally figured out why I had such a hard time getting a photo of the redesigned PS cooler setup from a UK member (I remember asking you as I believe you had a 94 model). The UK did not get the Z32 with the electric HICAS - even though everywhere else 94 models were the beginning of the electric HICAS. Parts records from Nissan indicate that 01/94 was the last production date for European RHD Z32's. However, I also have a UK magazine (that I'm expecting to receive in the mail any day now) that features an article about Nissan discontinuing the Z32 in the UK. I believe the date on it was May of 94. So not really sure what the last production date for the Z32 in the UK was, but imagine it was somewhere between Jan and May of 94.

I found someone in Italy who was able to confirm for me the later model setup via photos. The plan is to adapt it to my Z as I too have a later model. I was also able to get a Euro PS cooler that wasn't totally rotten and was a able to clean it up nicely.

Which magazine was the article in? I'd love to see a scan of it if that was possible in due course?

Andrew,

Sorry for the late reply.

Here is a photo of the article. It is a four page article. The writer states new emission laws have killed off the car as it would require an extra cat near the exhaust manifold and it could not be made to fit the UK version of the Z32. I really wonder if Nissan's simply didn't think a market was still there to purchase the car had they spent the money for the change.

It is found in AutoCar & Motor - May 25, 1994.
