You may read about the Highways agency putting in new speed cameras to catch motorists in an variable speed limit zone going speeding past a gantry where there isn't a camera

Well they are now active and set for exactly 70mph on the M6, M42, southern section of the M25 and today I've just seen one in action on the M1. It flashed as a guy on the other side went past , Seeing what they look like and and knowing what to look for it seems they are going to be on every gantry soon because the control box and wiring is being put in place on loads of gantries.... and obviously already live on some

You have been warned.

I'll stick to the A1 and go cross country !

I got it covered.

I think they'd take your Zed and put it in a crusher if you got caught with that !

Plus many Zeds are unique and can be traced through the DVLA

I think they drop to the lower speed when the cameras are active but then revert to 70 when they are not. The cameras weren't active yesterday but these me cameras got someone on the the other carriageway yesterday

They won't be set to 70, they have to allow for margins of error. All speedos read inaccurately and that's a known fact. I'd imagine they're set to +10% +2mph.

Where does your figure of 70mph come from?

From an email at work and an email from from beatthespeedtrap.co.uk

A sneaky speeding crackdown

is set to catch motorists out on

the M42 and M6 in Coventry

and Warwickshire.

Drivers could soon be booked

for going just over the 70 mph

limit.

The threat comes from "stealth

cameras" which were introduced to

enforce variable speed limits on

“Smart Motorways”.

However it has now been

disclosed that these cameras may

be used to strictly enforce the

70mph speed limit during non

variable limit hours.

The West Midlands has two sections

of Smart Motorways; the M42 to the

West and the M6 to the North of

Coventry.

Also sometimes called “Managed

Motorways”, the hard shoulder is

opened as an extra lane to ease

congestion at peak hours.

Overhead gantries display variable

speed limits, supposedly to keep

the traffic flowing as efficiently

as possible.

Up until now the cameras have

been switched off at quieter times,

when no variable speed limits are

in force.

But that's all set to change...

This misuse of these types of

cameras has already happened

before, in Kent…

The first victims of the “stealth

cameras” (also called Hadecs3)

were on a section of the M25.

668 motorists were caught in the

first three months after they were

switched on.

Of those, 520 drivers and riders

received tickets where the limit

was set at exactly 70mph.

Now this totalitarian crackdown is

set to be rolled out in the near

future on the M42 and M6...

So much for the Freedom Bill that

was introduced by the Government

in 2012!

If you’re driving in these areas any

time soon, watch out.

All the best,

Adam

These emails from various party's have been doing the rounds. That particular one also has "could" and "may" in it.

"Of those, 520 drivers and riders received tickets where the limit was set at exactly 70mph" for the Kent section"

That makes no sense as the legal limit is 70mph.

Yes, I know but cameras used be set with a tolerance +10%+2mph so in a &) limit it was 79mph

Now there is absolutely no tolerance is what they're saying

And all I was doing was issuing a warning of the new cameras on the M1

  • Author

They are the people that have seen these new cameras in action

If you want get pedantic take a drive round the southern end of the M25.

We've had someone come into the office complaining the cameras are flashing like Christmas tree lights when there is no variaable speed limit set

You may not have experienced them but if your in Surrey drive around and take a look

There is nothing wrong with being pedantic when it separates fact from fiction. Here is a piece of fact from the Association

of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) document and policy of speed awarness courses contained within the National Driver Offender

Retraining Scheme (NDORS) The document was last reviewed in January 2015 and the policies contained therein are current.

The relevent section to this thread is:

3.2.1 National Speed Awareness Course is designed to cover appropriate offences detected by Automatic Camera Devices

and Police Officers at the roadside within the range of (10% +2) mph to (10% +9) mph over the limit. They apply to all

environments (with the exception of 20 mph zones and limits) and all classes of vehicles. Any collision involving excess

speed would be more appropriate to the National Driver Alertness Course than Speed Awareness.

http://www.acpo.police.uk/documents/uniformed/2012/201207UONDORSvAPP.pdf

So these policies mean on motorways, speeding under 79mph is disregarded and 79mph to 86mph is possible National Speed

Awareness Course.

The key here is whether those drivers who were flashed on the motorways were then subsequently prosecuted and if so for what

speed to see if things have changed.

According to the emails I have had from work and beat the speedtrap they are being prosecuted for 71 mph

If you've faith in ACPO go on the M25 and do say 72 mph and see what happens !

I may have possibly been on a speed awareness course quite recently (ahem!) and they did make the point that not all police forces adhere to the same limits. Herts & Essex are certainly lenient but Wales are well known for having a zero tolerance approach in places. Also, all speedos over-read, not always by much as new ones are far more accurate than some of the older ones, but it is illegal for a speedo to under read, which in theory protects you from being done for 71mph etc.

Another point that was made is that many of the speed cameras are not switched on, or at least are on for only a few hours a day, as the police could simply not process the volume of tickets that would be issued if they ran 24x7.

They won't be set to 70, they have to allow for margins of error. All speedos read inaccurately and that's a known fact. I'd imagine they're set to +10% +2mph.

Not necessarily Si, they do give you 10% but that can be it, inclusive. I know a guy recently booked for 33mph under the current Dorset no excuses programme, I asked him about about his 10% and he explained he asked he same thing and was informed that was his 10% and tat it was inclusive ie he was speeding. It varies from region to region, not much conformity in these things.

It varies from region to region, not much conformity in these things.

Not least in Dorset it would appear:

http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/11035973.Quick_learner_driver_gets_speeding_fine_____on_a_driving_lesson/

In that case the driver was offered a speed awarness course in line with ACPO guidelines. Was your 33mph man offered

a course rather than points?

this says it all

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-30841666

Exceeded a speed of 70 mph or 40 , 50 or 60 according to how the camera is set. They stay active at 70 as it says, because variable speed limit never shows 70mph, it shows a derestricted sign (National speed limit sign)

Edited by TonyB

What does it say in the context of your original assertion that people are being prosecuted for doing

70mph on motorways?

The BBC article states "781 had exceeded a speed limit of 70mph, according to Kent Police", but not

by how much before being prosecuted and that it the point here.

I guess you must be involved with the police

But as I said before - Drive round the M25 in the section mentioned at 72 mph and tell us all what happens ... I await your report with interest !

i got caught doing 32 in a 30 by a gatso camera in the west mercia region near ross on wye, which does not even allow for the 10% margin, that was in my zed with a kmh to mph converter on, i contested the ticket and stating i was under the 10% margin that should be allowed, they declined the application and it went to court needless to say i ended up paying the fine plus costs and points on my license

Done it - many times!
