Im thinking that 2.5 inch pipe work is better for the front mount im wanting. The inlets and outlets are 2.5" but the pipework reduces straght down two 2" with reduces with all kits on the market. So im thinking ill buy the intercooler on its own then buy some pipe work to fit. My question is should i buy three inch pipe with 3" to 2.5" couplers or what best size to get.or can i get 2.5" pipe and what size joiners will fit suggly over both pipes without air leaks.

You need a kit for 2.5" intercooler piping, z1 and others sell these. Then you will mostly likely need to custom make the portion that converts from SMIC to FMIC, as far as I'm aware no one makes an on the shelf kit for what your asking. Making the kit yourself from 2.5" tube will require lots of fabrication time and the ability to weld. Simply coupling up sections of tube with silicone couplers every few inches will create nightmares for generations, think of all those potential leak points.

Again as far as I'm aware a 3" version isn't available or required. 2.5" intake kits are what has been designed and made by the expert tuners.

Didn't you say mark is doing the work for you?

Silverline and I designed and built my custom 2.5" piping in a night, including a break to map his car. Off-the-shelf piping with silicone joiners, rearward-facing FMIC inlets/outlets.

Even with a stock MAF located in the pipework, running at 1.7bar I had no boost leaks. Beads on all pipework ends plus genuine Jubilee clips.

Didn't you say mark is doing the work for you?

Yes i did say that marks doing the work. Ie putting tubs in cam belt.sppedo. bearings and sheels. But i have a class tig wielder mate in norwich called Mark stacey who own power and performence exhaust.just trying to get all the bits and up and running.then i suspect over to horning later to get all weilded up full custom built. But that takes lots of pennies.itll get there though this year

Is he a mate? As in like the work will be done for beer tokens? I'm sure in your line of work you know plenty of coded pipewelders. If that's the case it's just a question if speaking your mate, telling him what you want and letting him crack on.

Yes ive known mark just shy of twenty years. We use to go all tound the country at weekends away at custom car shoes ect. And then weekends off roading in our discos. But i also like to do stuff for myself aswell.and although his a mate.his still hot to make a living.and his quality of his workman ship dosnt come cheap.that said ive aslo owned a carbody repair shop and can weld a sill on but fully admit never attemted that sort of weilding i just because your getting to personel and dont know why or what your durgesting have owned and built from scratch my own wholesale food business as well. But what ive done in the past has no bearing on a mate or relationship you have with anyone. So what you saying. Or are you done.

That would leave me with one hell of a boost leak!

I would sell my FMIC & 2.5" kit I guess, not sure when though, probably in a month or so once I've sorted out this new dyno which is the bane of my life. I know you are in a rush for things though.

I have sent you a P M

It's alright buddy, I know how easy it is to mis read or mis write things. A voice changes the meaning of things at times.

Yep forums can be good and bad places at times for discussions Steve i fully agree.

I wouldn't take offence to things mate. Just the written word can sometimes come over wrong but all he was trying to get at is whether your friends would look to do it as a favour etc rather than a paid job at full price.

Since I've now read this, I'm curious, does a FMIC have any benefits over good and bigger SMIC's?

I know straght away so many members of the forume are going to say no and they prefer a larger smic. But the fact remains. There must be a good reason do many race and tracked cars have large fms.im sure somone will be along soon .but i personally think its a personal choice.and that said if you want to keep tha standerd look then a fm would look a bit odd.but im also oponing up my front with a p spec twin z jobby and need to fill that large void with beautiful cooling air.
