Alright guys and gals. Finally got a z32. 1991. Twin turbo manual. Very happy. It does however look a bit tired on the paint but nothing I can't sort there. Done 90000. Mechanically it's great. No smoke. Boost needle where it should be. Sounds great. New timing belt. Very happy. However. What are the tell tail signs the clutch is going?

Pictures later date as I don't know how to put them on as I am on my phone aha

Right. Been to a zx garage today for them to tell me my clutch is going... (I knew that). Engine wise. Absolutely fine. Needs a new gear stick bush. Loads of play. New looms for the coil packs as they have snapped. Needs a new front mounted intercooler because this one has hit a rock at some point. .. that will have to wait

Also it pulls slightly to the left. I asked this and he said its something to do with the 4 wheels steering and the rear wheels or something

Why don't you just replace the broken intercooler with a second hand stock one for now. Cheap and proper fix. You certinatly don't need a FMIC.

Yeah true. The clutch is the thing I getting first. Can't afford anything else aha

Oh I forgot. It has an aftermarket fuel pressure valve.its set at 6 Barr!?!?!. The mechanic ssaid it should be down to about 3 Barr. When I put it down to 3 it wouldn't rev past 3000 rpm. Why is it so high?

Yea great bunch of lads.

Cheapest option would be to replace the FMIC with another from eBay. FMIC are a very worthwhile upgrade, don't revert to stock.

What were the AFRs when you took it to the specialist and the fuel pressure was discovered? What were the Consult (diagnostic) values?

6 bar is ridiculously high, the injector latency will be off the scale! Maybe the ECU has a chip programmed for larger injectors, and it has had stock injectors fitted for some reason. The ECU map is the first thing that should be determined.

The FPR should be set to 3 bar with the vacuum line disconnected. At idle it will sit around 2.5 bar on a healthy engine & set up.

Right. I personally don't think it's had a remap. I could be wrong. Just because it's running at quite high boost and only making 320 hp

What boost is it running at?

How long did the previous owner have it for?

320bhp is very low for a modified Zed. When was it on the dyno last?

I would have to check the boost mate. Will be summat like 15 psi. Previous owner had for 4 month. Couldn't afford it. Dyno in may last year. Invoice for boost setting and a overall setup

Meant to say. I have a thing in the car what tells me the O2 sensors and everything. When driving it basically says it's normal afr. When turned down it really does go lean and engine runs like rubbish

Invoice from whom and for what exactly? If you can be specific, then it is easier to diagnose what could be the issue. 6 bar fuel pressure in order for the car to run over 3000rpm means it's been messed around with quite a bit.

Wideband gauge with digital/analogue readout, typically 10:1 - 20:1? Or just a narrowband gauge that says lean/stoich/rich?

It was an invoice from a company called dynosek or something. Don't have with me at the minute. That's the dyno read out.

Same company it just says boost set up

Digital readout. Don't really know much about it but it tells me everything. Speed, rpm, O2, loads more

  • Author

Tell me about it. Gonna ring the Zed people tomorrow see when they can get their laptop on it and so they can have a proper go at it

Get it all ripped out and returned to stock starting point. Get the car running 100%. Then apply some sensible and well known modifications for decent results.

Apexi RSM?

It's AFR that is important when tuning anything.

I don't think he needs to go that far, but it definitely needs setting up properly by the sounds of it. Still can't believe someone somewhere thought it would be OK to set the fuel pressure at 6 bar base! That's over 100psi at a bar of boost. Scary what some people do....

  • Author

Not an apexi mate. I will let you know... would it help if I turned down the boost slightly and then turned down the fuel?

No, it's not a guessing game I'm afraid. Best to turn the boost all the way down and drive it very carefully until it's sorted.

It also has quite a bit of turbo lag at 5000rpm

What, the turbos don't kick in until 5000rpm?

Eh? I'd be taking it nice and easy with the engine until its been given the once over by someone clued up.

These engines fly over 5000rpm, very rev happy!

  • Author

No no. Turbos kick in early. Let's say 2nd gear. Quite happy until about 5000 then slows right down then up again

That's not turbo lag.

That's your newly acquired car telling you to stop driving it.

Power should be clean, powerful and smooth right through the rev range until close to 7k.

Take it easy with that engine bud.

  • Author

Yeah will do. Will turn boost down tomorrow before work.

I thought that this could be the fuel mixture being too rich or too lean
