Fully Clear & LED Tail Lights with Totally Unique Feature/s !!

I have genuine 99 tails which a few years ago i did led up but i had one single failure out of the 12 strips i crammed in so i ripped them out and learnt from it, ever since i just used stock filament bulbs in them which i will keep as a spare set.

Not going to reveal just yet what these do until i get fitted and can show in a video but these were made from a stock 89 tango pair involving a tremendous amount of work but i'm very happy with how they've turned out.

I have made fully clear lens tails before but never for myself and certainly not with led's and/or the unique selling point .

Great work there mate

One small suggestion though, carry on the 99 pinstripe into the reverse light panel like you did for me on my old zed

I like with and without Dave, i have a lot going on with my reverse light panel illumination and it's best not to disturb so left it be.

I was going to keep the top chamber red but leds behind the red lens was a different red i got from red leds behind the clear in the indicator chamber, so to perfectly match i had to go clear on both and anyway this is a different look/change i had from my genuine 99's.

Took a pic just now, during the day you don't get the stock single bulb chamber jam packed full of light like i have .

Some great work there. I like the indicators in the mirror housings, but for me overkill with the wing repeaters as well.

Rear lights, the way to go if your staying with the factory units.

I have just tweaked these a bit, all the leds were outward facing which was incredibly pretty but it bothered me as i wanted the lenses to look as white as possible and the strip lights were dulling the look down. Another reason i wanted and knew and have, made them brighter.

They still work in the exactly the same way, both top and bottom uniquely as sidelights in red and then the bottom switches to yellow when indicating. In the below pic you can just make out the red leds i bespoke fit especially in the top part, when fitted on the car you can hardly see them, even if you do then it's the same in both top and bottom exactly.

The bottom chamber lends itself very well to strip leds but the top however is a different matter and this was MY dilemma which i think i've solved. Please note pic is taken with units more tilted back than when fit on the car, hence the red individual leds can be seen more than normal.

Finally, lots of wiring/soldering. The silver block btw is the switchback delay module.

You may notice two bullet connectors, one is to turn off the lower red side light part, so when tested if the mot guy is not happy i can make this indicator chamber work as stock by turning off completely the red led strip.

I have some bright red smd cree stop tail bulbs in the top, this is a change from the first version above ones i did as 'stop' were again a strip and i had completely done away with the stock bulb locations, the brake lights now are these bulbs - nothing else is brake and are brighter than before - a touch more than the standard bulbs and certainly more red.

These dual contact cree bulbs have a less bright 'tail' part and this other bullet is for the option of turning off and on this. If i had these working the top chamber would therefore look different from the lower chamber when just sidelights are on - hope you follow that !

I have no bulb in the stock indicator holder as the strip does it all.

Love them mirrors mate wouldnt mind a set of them myself.

Thank you John, they're very bright and all my indicators are the same leds which means all the same brightness and colour, not to mention the modern crispness you get with them.

Pic below is just with tail lights on, difficult to show how red it all is and is certainly better in the flesh.

I have the cree 80w white bulbs in the stock position reverse panel lower chambers and i've made the top fog ones better with an extra hidden diffuser behind the stock outer lens and i've also cut away a little plastic which spreads the red out more hence filling the chamber better, with the aim for it to match the new look tail units as best i can.

Quite happy with the rear now, i could quite easily put some red strips in the markers that will fill them better but it's not eating away at me .

How much would you charge for rear clusters like this but without the pinstripes, all other indicators to match, and a rear panel?

This kind of thing was what I had planned for mine when I eventually find a zed worth buying, but it'd save me a lot of messing about.

Another thought, how hard would it be to make the indicators sweep like they do on modern Audi's?

I am not doing any like this with the switchback system, saving this for myself :p.

However, it is not a problem to do clear lenses in both with red stop/tail bulbs in the normal top and a yellow led strip in the bottom, i did make some like this for a guy in the USA only about a month ago and it works well.

The chasing indicator is being considered, i'm not sure will work so well as the chamber is quite large but certainly something for a later date.

The switchback bit is fine, it looks great but I'd be happy with just the top row as stop/tail and the lower row as indicators only as normal, but would want it all led if possible. Like I say I was going to attempt it myself but you've already nailed it. :)

But I reckon the zed rear indicators would look great sweeping like this:

I like yellow it's illegal !!

I've not looked but 5630 smd Graham is what i have for the winkers, 5050 is probably just enough brightness fit for the rear tail lights .

Why u say yellow illegal? Nice work btw

Believe me i've tried to use strips for the brake part and they're either not bright enough or even looking so look daft, sure i can put individual bright red leds in which was my plan with the latter version but the chamber is unevenly shaped which makes life near impossible if you're like me and want symmetry.

The stop/tail bulbs i talk about for the top chamber is the best option and anyway these are smd/led bulbs i'm talking about and not your standard filament type.

You don't need to show me chasing indicators as i know all about them !!

All the MOT regs state they should be amber, all mine are definitely yellow but i don't expect a problem, if i do have a problem i'm up a creek...

I know you know what I'm on about, but thought I'd share that video for others to see what we're talking about. :-)

Exactly mate AMBER is required now here's the clever bit, how "Amber" is "Amber"? There's no definition of Amber in the testing guide.

Now then- your indicators aren't red or white so they are amber enough for me. I'd pass them no problem. And so should any other tester. :thumbup1:

I like them on the Audi but I have to be honest in that I think the zed is done poorly

Agreed! these lights don't suit the Zed, looks like Night Rider with a short circuit and the LED's!!!! may as well have stuck them on the outside...or did they!

I did twin clear rear lights with led's last year but got to redo one due to crazing, not 99 spec though, iv got to say those led mirrors are the nuts!! bloody love em! good work phutumsch :D
