Hi guys, can you tell me whats the difference between a HID set costing £20 and one costing £80, and no prizes for anyone saying £60. Would, for instance, the expensive one have a brighter output for a set of 6000 bulbs?

In my experience most of the kits, regardless of price, come with the same ballasts so are likely built in the same factory in deepest China.

Personally hate 6000k bulbs regardless of price of the kit. But that's personal preference.

(I've got a kit that cost £22 and is 5000k)

Zed #2: 1998 Midnight Purple 2+2 NA. (owned 2020 - now)

Zed #1: 1995 Blue Slicktop NA (2013-2015)

Personally I would avoid chinese made ballasts altogether. The experience Jim Selin found in tracking down the problem with early

Selin dual Maf translators and HIDs would put me off using them whether or not you had one of his translators.

"All of the Chinese sourced ballasts I was able to test sent voltage spikes into the cars electrical system as high as 300 volts (!!!) This is

also repeatedly hitting every other computer in your system." - Jim Selin

Can't do wrong for £20 set, if they break just buy another set and then you'll have a spare.

Not had any problems with the various sets I've bought

They're available for £15 a set on eBay, looking to get a few for my cars.

Is there a particular set out there that is of decent quality?

I think that is the first question I have ever asked on this forum. Someone educate me in cheap Chinese HIDs, I feel like such a NOOB :wack:

I bought a 35w 6000k HID kit from Danny (DTA) in a group buy on here about 8 years or so ago, pretty much when they were first available as a retro fit mod. I think they cost me over £200 but the results were excellent, one of the best mods I did.

My daily drive has xenon headlamps and they are even better than those so recently I decided to purchase a 55w 5000k kit on eBay for about £17 posted. I honestly think they're worse than the ancient 35w kit that I removed..?

I would be keen to learn which ones are the good ones.

Interesting point about LED bulbs - and I too look forward to the feedback.....

.....I appreciate that OEM LED headlights are installed (with much success) on various high-end German motors; but the last time I read up on retro-fit LED bulb upgrades for the usual H1/H2/H3/H4 set-up, they were not so good. I remember reading they were bright - but only when looking at them; when it came to useable light out-put on the road, the LED upgraded bulbs were poor.....

.....But times do change and I am always open to new developments.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

That's the type I always find floating around a Zed engine bay.

This is the ballast out of the way & plastic tie secured.

Def not floating around my engine bay Noz:innocent:
