As is ever the threat to our democratic rights in this country, being undermined by the rights/ beliefs/ opinions of the few, being forced upon (by law) of the majority, here we have an example of something that is closer to home for Car clubs and enthusiast by threatening their very freedom to show drive and meet with their cars!

A ruling in the Birmingham area has upheld a petition to Ban!, car road racing and parades!. The Ruling refers to complaints of large gatherings of cars (up to 250) in the area, but the new enforcement could be applied to as little as two or more vehicles!

I have no issue with any rules that stop idiots street racing whether on roads or in car parks, but this is all the more sinister as it bans the gathering or parading of groups of cars and potentially incurs a jail term for those taking part as well as organisers. Considerately not as yet the spectators!

So the days of pub, café, car park meets, whether your from the Morgan owners club or the Jap spoon specials! could be numbered! Let alone meeting with your mate who happens to drive the same car.

Unlikely to get enforced into how you're reading into it. It basically gives more power in law to penalise those who are breaking the law. Police are unlikely to pull over a parade of Morris Minor owners driving sensibly to a car event, or are they to engage in people following each other driving responsibly.

Laws are too lenient for tosspot chavs hanging out in car parks and such like doing burn outs, racing down streets, driving like morons and causing a nuisance to the neighboroughood. If those people are then caught as part of a crack down, that's great. It's those types that authorities are to target.

The biggest issue is the use of the word 'cruise'. They're not cruising, they're either parked up with their 12 year old girlfriends, or doing handbrake turns and doughnuts. A 'cruise' really ought to be 'just that', a nice relaxing convoy of cars driving through nice scenery.

I HATE cruise type events that seem to be all the rage in this country. FULL of chavs, shitty modified cars, moron drivers and the combined IQ of about 45. I've never been into the whole street-racing scene, drifting or anything like that, so I'm probably being unfair and prejudice.

My point still stands, as a target demographic, these 'cruise' events are what police are going to go for, so I wouldn't worry.

I saw this on BBC news website. I thought ...."jailed for meeting at KFC".........

If this happens elsewhere there should be a challenge in court (not sure if this application to the court went unchallenged or not)

As a precedent has now been set it's a matter of time until it happens near us all.

Car clubs/enthusiasts groups etc need to challenge this in court as it happens so that the unreasonable detail (ie no more than 2 cars) is not allowed to pass.

If you see clips of the behaviour its intended to tackle (car park /street racing) it's easy to see why the courts will rule against gatherings. However- the number of cars needs challenging so that small groups can meet in peace.

....rant over....

Long live the revolution!

The few abiding by the wishes of the majority is, er, democracy.

As an ex Chelsea Bridge cruiser, the behaviour shown in that video is out of order, antisocial and dangerous. Properly organised meets (eg Ace Cafe, car clubs, local pubs) aren't going to promote that sort of chavvy nonsense so the injunction won't be relevant. BTW it's only in 4 counties and only for 3 years. Don't drive like a d*ck and it will go away.

Um!

I understand the likely hood of it's application to responsible club type drivers, I am also aware of the geographic limitations at this time, as I raised in the post. The time scale of the enforcement is neither here nor there, this can always be extended.

What makes me uncomfortable is the ease at which a local law can be enforced, opening it up to a potential national law!

The fact that this is limited to two cars and above raises questions on what is a Cruise, a gathering, or a mob of enthusiasts!

The freedoms we enjoy and take for granted are soon undermined by those that seek to abuse them, to the detriment of all.

Cruising has long been illegal, what's the issue here?

Even Al Pacino knew it was wrong, and he's a Cuban drug lord for Christ's sake.

Unenforcable drivel. You can ban friends with the same car going to the same place at the same time.

So coventry meet is off next year? And any local meets, Xmas pub meets

It all right spectators are immune to the law so if we all park in different car parks and walk to the museum it's legal...

Stupid un thought through law... I'm all for preventing idiots, but this is just ridiculous

I have said this in the past and will say it again there should be places for the likes to meet up that don't cost the earth some waste ground or something like that theres plenty of places like that and can be open of a weekend maybe you can meet there and there is some a load of space you can thrash ye car round there. and before anyone says track days most young lads cant afford to go to them just a bit of land some were one in each town it could be done. I had a big debate about this few months ago on here. so I don't want to get into that again. we could do that of we can just leave them to drive like clowns on the road

There is a local banger racing oval near me, charges a nominal fee it's a meet and they do drift evenings. I haven't been to it as it's not my thing and driving my car on a concrete walled oval with the chance of broken glass and metal fragments doesn't float my boat, it's an option for some though.

Thanks to the statute of limitations on utter stupidity, I don't mind disclosing that in the old days I used to hit the cruises. From Leicester Six Hills, to Naughty Notts, Birmingham Wheels, Skegness & Southend. Anyone on here remember Wheels & Notts from back in the day. Oooof!

The 'meet' is just the tip of the iceberg. I've never once been to a cruise and not seen a high level of "God damn street racers" street racing afterwards. Frankly, the meet is the foreplay, the racing is the balls-deep action that everyone looks forward to. If you think it's any different, you came (and went) too quickly ;)

It's been that way since the beginning, last time I went to Sixhills about a year ago, it was no different. Thankfully, I discovered the joys of Santa Pod over a decade ago, which now allows me to climb up on my soap box and ride off on my high horse.

The job of the law is to punish the young for doing the same things the previous generation did without prosecution. That's bull I know but you get my point, kids used to be kids now their hooligans, most don't do anything new it's just the world has changed around them. I also enjoy the hypocrisy of many of the ruling class/age, 95% of young people wouldn't dream of having 3-8 pints then driving home, yet pops will, he always has and won't stop now just cos it's illegal. He will damn well point out your hooligan like nature for daring to be sitting around chatting in public.

I love life, it's full of knobs. Most of them are in charge as well, at least they think things through and spend out money properly not treat us like cash cows and treat grown adults like children.

looks like I best sell sell my z then as am building it to thrash the arse out of it in empty car parks

Why?

Genuine question, as I don't understand the appeal. If it's empty, no one will be watching. Slalom course to hone your driving skills?

am being honest now, here we go I work for self have a small biz its hard work. I also like going walking in wales and hiking I go the gym often I don't drink or smoke I have just started going shooting as in shot guns. i have a simple life. now the point am making is, i do lots of sensible stuff in my life but when i got my first car at 18 i was hooked with in weeks my first car was 205gti 1.9 i found that when i go for a blast some were in a fast car i just love to see them tyres light up and booting the car to the max in every gear its like a release it makes me very happy and and for a few mins some times i can forget about other stuff in my life. its just my high if that makes sense some drink some smoke some do drug other use hooked we all have are vice ripping the back out of a fast car just gives me the best buzz in my live i craze this feeling all the time as am sure you know i have had many fast cars and 2 superbikes noz am just hooked the thrill is better than sex. and i love boning this girl am seing but give me a fast car any day. sorry for the lack of full stops hope that makes sensee and that is the honest answer

But there's minimal thrill from doing it in an empty car park. Some people find it boring, but drag racing for me gives me a huge buzz.

The Need For Speed is strong in this one :D

Its very daft in my opinion. It'll just move onto somewhere else, like it has been doing for the past 10 years.

We used to 'cruise' round notts city centre - loads of police - moved onto

Mansfield centre = council spent £1000's putting speed bumps in place, which was funny as they were so high the busses got grounded on them, so then they spent £1000's replacing them - moved onto

j27 on the m1= 2 roundabouts with a dual carriageway inbetween, used to be over 300 cars every sunday plus about 3 police vans loads of police and the helicopter, put an injunction in place for a year and spent £1000's on cameras. Moved onto

Netherpod, a strip of road in an industrial estate in netherfield. Which then moved to the road next to it, again 2 roundabouts with dual carriageway in between, drifting began. Council spent £112000 making the dual into a single carriageway.

Now its all just on the main roads or parked up in retail parks as they have massive parking areas.

They tried a track day event at donnington park although no one has insurance for race tracks so that died out.

And all along, all they needed was a cop car sat in the same place, if there was a copper there, there was no racing just sitting, talking and listening to music.

Broadmarsh Circuit. Simple, yet challenging :wack:

I think Wheels was the most fun though, back in the day. I once went there in my Sapphire Cosworth, streets lined with people shouting "boot it", "Cosseh", "I love you Noel" etc. Unfortunately, I was running it in at the time, really stupid place to go for that. True story.

Sapphire Cosworth great car total icon of its time
