"You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel!" - Mondo's new Zed.

Yesterday saw me head down to Kent to pick up my new Shortie! :D I got on the motorway to come back home about 4pm.

At 9pm, I was safely tucked away... on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) near York with a grand total of 1 wheelnut holding my rear passenger wheel on!!! The other 4 studs decided to shear off while I was in the outside lane - there was an almighty bang, the back-end of the car went completely loose so I had no choice but to dive for the shoulder! :(

The recovery truck arrived at 11pm and I slowly edged my new tripod onto the flatbed, before we headed off back to mine.

Spoke to Mr F this morning and he's ordered me 10 new rear studs, so my new car is currently undrivable. Seems it had cheap slot-on spacers on the back, no spigot rings and the end result was 4 wheelstuds missing.

Gotta love Zeds, eh...?!

Update time :)

The good: my Zed's now in primer as we speak and should be ready to put back together this weekend  Can't wait!

There is, however, a snag....

The bad: mine and Josh's order from Z1 has suffered from "poor picking" and some of our parts haven't been shipped! :( My new nose emblem is missing, which isn't the end of the world, but is an inconvenience. The potential big setback is that the clips for my new mouldings haven't been shipped either!

Luckily (hopefully), I managed to remove the old mouldings without damaging the clips so I'm hoping I'll be able to re-use them to mount the new trims...

Fingers crossed!!!

The centre bar ("hook") is the same part number for 2+2 and 2+0.

That's interesting to know, JP. Makes me wonder why Z1 make customers specify whether they need it for the 2+2 or the 2+0....

Hmmm.

So if the centre hook only has one part number, that must mean that there's no difference in actual curvature or width of the targa glass between the two models.

And I can't imagine that the glass itself is any longer or wider either. So that must surely mean that the only difference between the SWB targas and the LWB targas is the end panel that sits on top of the window glass. Right...?

So that should then mean that you could strip a UK blue glass targa down to the glass, and then simply fit that to a SWB end piece, thus giving you a blue glass SWB targa panel...

...right...?

The SWB one looks very slightly more curved imo

Actually Lee you are right. Its hard to see it in the pics but the swb bar sits higher in the middle (about 1.5mm) its not much and I dont know if thats the way it came from the factory or because the swb bar is older and the sun in Japan has warped it over the years. But the new lwb bar does fit as it bolts down tight to the roof. We still need some one to interchange the targs on a roof to be sure.

EDIT Got mixed up in lwb and swb bars but now fixed.

We'll have to leave the targa conundrum til my car's back home and Bird's been over so we can swap them around to see what's what, I think.

FedEx have just been with my Z1 order and, thankfully, they've sent the right parts! A brand new set of Kuruma-Z door and quarterglass edges, just awaiting my newly-painted Zed

Speaking of my Zed, the last thing I heard last night is that the paintwork was finished on the body and just needed lacquer :) Then they've got all the bumpers and ancilliaries to paint. Then we can start putting her back together!!

Hi Gary

Can you give me the details of LWb Targa bar please (part No, whose got them and and how much) The rubber is peeling off on mine and I need to replace it

Thanks

Tony

I bought mine from Luke @Zcentre six years ago (but has been sitting in a box for 5 years when I took it of the lwb) Plus Mike will sell them also.

When I rebuilt my swb I used my old lab targas in the roof just to keep the raIn off

They fit but they do not fit correctly.

I also just bought a new centre bar. I'm sure it said 2s on it.

Mondo- I bought some new weather strips but never got round to fitting them, you will have to let me know what they are like

It would be nice to know that I could change to some blue targa glass easily, I'm planning on a change as I need a new screen anyway

Well, at least Z1 have sent me the right targa hook (according to that diagram, anyway) :thumbup1:

And speaking of Z1: I popped over to Josh's gaff last night to collect the parts they'd actually shipped. When I got home, I realised that the clips for the scuttle panels were missing.

So he rang me and, whilst on the phone, he had a proper check round all the boxes at his place. Imagine our collective surprise when my "non-shipped" bits turned out to be stuck at the bottom of a box!!

That means that, thankfully, all the parts I ordered are here and ready for me to start putting Diesel back together again :) Which should be tomorrow morning, according to the bodyshop!!

YAY!!

  • Author

Just home from the bodyshop and she's 50% back together now :)

Bumpers, mirrors, door handles, nose panel and spats all need to be refitted yet but I got the new mouldings, scuttle panels and centre hook fitted - the brand new parts make a BIG difference!!

Fitting the windscreen trims and the rear mouldings though... god, what a mission!! Hopefully I'll never have to do them again!

So yeah, tomorrow should see her back at home again

Neither targa will fit/swap over, I tried them both

The first one with lwb top and the second visa versa, the curvatures are different in the centre bar. The last two are obvious side by side
