"You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel!" - Mondo's new Zed.

Yesterday saw me head down to Kent to pick up my new Shortie! :D I got on the motorway to come back home about 4pm.

At 9pm, I was safely tucked away... on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) near York with a grand total of 1 wheelnut holding my rear passenger wheel on!!! The other 4 studs decided to shear off while I was in the outside lane - there was an almighty bang, the back-end of the car went completely loose so I had no choice but to dive for the shoulder! :(

The recovery truck arrived at 11pm and I slowly edged my new tripod onto the flatbed, before we headed off back to mine.

Spoke to Mr F this morning and he's ordered me 10 new rear studs, so my new car is currently undrivable. Seems it had cheap slot-on spacers on the back, no spigot rings and the end result was 4 wheelstuds missing.

Gotta love Zeds, eh...?!

Pick up some 'dog food' eh wink wink........scenic spot indeed, sounds very much like where couples go in their cars, 5 mins seems a bit on the topside for you though .

Yeah, guilty as charged... I picked up some little floozy in town and took her to the duck pond for some "alone time"...

You can only imagine her disappointment when she went to hop into the back seat and found herself in the boot instead!!

Couple of mini-updates from the last few days :)

Finally got around to fitting my extension cables for the rear coilovers! I also retrimmed the rear speaker covers in a nice black, as the original covers were ridiculously faded and just generally shabby-looking!

And today, my replacement oil filler cap arrived. I think it looks considerably better than the OEM one that was there previously :)

Update time, again:

A week on Monday, she's off to the paintshop. I wasn't planning on having the bodywork dealt with quite so soon, but I've been offered a superb deal on a full respray that was simply too good an opportunity to pass up!

The dents in the driver's door will be pulled out as far as possible, in order to minimise the amount of filling needed. Then the whole exterior will be stripped back and given a nice new lashing of 673 Silver - except for the roof bars... ;)

Can't. Wait!! :D

So, because of this, I'll be replacing all the damaged or worn out trim. I have a brand new pair of rear mouldings here (that sit between the targas and the bootlid) and the trims on my targas themselves are undamaged, but the windscreen mouldings and the top edge trims on the doors will be replaced with brand new ones, as will the targa centre trim. So once it's all done, she should be looking rather snazzy!

Then all I really need to do is find some time to finish my own interior off. All the trim's done except for the doorcards (as I'm waiting on a better pair, courtesy of Baz) so that just leaves the seats themselves. Find time, Mondo... find time...!!

She'll be like a different car completely by the summer! :thumbup1:

Just read this thread from start to finish. There's some really nice work in there. As to your dilemma with the front bumpers Si, I'd get both painted up and keep one up safe so you can interchange them for days when you want a different look:cool3:. That's what I'm planning on doing anyway. You'll have the best of both worlds!!

Cheers, Richie :)

The 99 Spec front bumper now lives in Essex though - I decided the original face was the one I loved the most

Plus not a lot of members will know that the lwb and swb targa's are interchangeable (same size)

That's quite surprising actually!

Just for info Si the swb targa centre trim is the same as the lwb. I know this as I had a new one for my black lwb and was able to put it on my swb. Plus not a lot of members will know that the lwb and swb targa's are interchangeable (same size)

This surprises me a lot! I thought there was more of a curve to the SWB roof than the LWB one...

I know Iam getting old but three years ago when I had both Z's sitting beside each other I changed the targas over and they fitted. Wish I took a picture

Query: if the targas are interchangeable between the SWB and the LWB, why are the B pillars on the Shortie doors a different height...? Genuinely curious here!

Anyway, me and Josh have just put an order into Z1 so some brand spanking new goodies will be winging their way towards my Zed, hopefully to pretty much coincide with the bodywork and respray being completed :)

Can't. Wait!!!

The spending continues - brand new bolsters ordered today from Recaro!

I want to make sure that my seats are super-firm and without defects when the new covers go on :thumbup1:

Genuinely scary stuff, stripping so much off! I just kept telling myself it'll all be worth it when she's gleaming and beautiful again.....

Good work matey, you having it painted the same colour?

I debated long and hard about having her painted white instead, as I always wanted a white Zed. But it's simply too much grief either moving or removing things under the bonnet so it didn't look like a half-arsed job!

So she'll be staying the standard 673 Silver, but with a few nice little embellishments as well ;)

All the dents and scratches will be gone (thank God!) and the brand new trims and mouldings should make a sizeable difference to the look as well

Did the door glass seal properly when wound up?

As far as I remember they were a perfect fit Andrew with no difference between the two types.

The next time there is a meet on with some lwb and swb Z's someone needs to try and swap targa's over to see if my memory is still working.:wheelchair:

I bet you cant wait to get the Z back all painted and new trim fitted Si. Mine could do with a new coat and the roof bars painted black. I also have brand new OEM Nissan SWB door rubbers which I bought from a member here over a year ago and I wont fit them untill I get the lady painted

Found an old thread with my parts and it was over 4 years ago I bought the rubbers :w00t:

Not a lot to report today. I popped over to the bodyshop yesterday morning and someone had been out to see about Smart Repairing the driver's door - it looks considerably better now, but still needs a little bit of filler work doing.

I double-checked that the guys knew exactly what I wanted from them and then I headed home again. I'm expecting to get the car back late on next week as the Z1 order probably won't be here til Tuesday or Wednesday, and I can't (and won't) start putting her back together until that order's in my possession!

So as I said, not much to report. Oh yeah, there is one thing.....

My interior's finished!!!!! Well, apart from the steering wheel... but the new seat covers are all made and the doorcards have been revamped so, once she's back home, I can get everything fitted and she'll be pretty much ready for the shows!!

I'm just having a read over this thread again, because I like it. I'll be seeing mondo in the next week or 2 so I'll take my zed and see how interchangeable the teargas are if no one else does it first and if mondo is good with it

I've been Googling the targa subject to death over the last couple of days and the general concensus seems to be that the two variants aren't interchangeable, primarily due to the curvature of the different rooflines.

Which leads me to think that the centre bar must be different between the two as well.

Here's what I'm wondering: Gary said he swapped his new centre bar from his Family Estate to his Shortie, so the mounting holes must be the same. But has this then enabled him to get the LWB targas to fit where they wouldn't normally do so...?

Hmmm.....
