"You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel!" - Mondo's new Zed.

Yesterday saw me head down to Kent to pick up my new Shortie! :D I got on the motorway to come back home about 4pm.

At 9pm, I was safely tucked away... on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) near York with a grand total of 1 wheelnut holding my rear passenger wheel on!!! The other 4 studs decided to shear off while I was in the outside lane - there was an almighty bang, the back-end of the car went completely loose so I had no choice but to dive for the shoulder! :(

The recovery truck arrived at 11pm and I slowly edged my new tripod onto the flatbed, before we headed off back to mine.

Spoke to Mr F this morning and he's ordered me 10 new rear studs, so my new car is currently undrivable. Seems it had cheap slot-on spacers on the back, no spigot rings and the end result was 4 wheelstuds missing.

Gotta love Zeds, eh...?!

Update: Diesel has been dropped off at the bodyshop to have the old spoiler removed, the new fibreglass one sprayed and fitted (along with a new blackout strip) and also the rear bumper is getting resprayed. :)

She'll be ready for collection last thing tomorrow afternoon.

In other news, I ordered a pair of polybushes from Driftworks to go with my Hicas delete kit. At least, I thought I ordered a pair but, in reality, I only ordered one of the buggers!!

At least it turned out to be a genuine one after all! With indicators too! :)

Well, off to collect Diesel from the bodyshop shortly so hopefully I'll still be smiling when I get home.....

So I've collected her from the bodyshop and they've done a nice job on the spoiler and rear bumper :)

The only niggle is that the GRP spoiler seems to be slightly shallower (front to back) than the original so there's a couple of little visible parts on the tailgate where the paint's been damaged by the old one :( Only small, but they're there.

If I send the 99 Spec front off for painting, I'll get them to rectify those marks on the bootlid at the same time. :thumbup1:

All in all though, I'm happy that I now have a spoiler that isn't knackered and doesn't have a crap flaky blackout strip on it! I'll stick some pics up over the weekend :)

Cant remember my rear fibreglass spoiler being slightly smaller but there was no damage to the paint when I took the old one of so it was never noticed.Any pics Si?

Gary: unless it's an issue with their fitment of it, the spoiler seems to be maybe 5mm shallower at the front edge (nearest the rear windscreen) than the original one. I'm gonna have a proper look at the marks on the tailgate tomorrow in the daylight and see what's what.

Tony: if I keep the bumper, that mesh is the first thing to be going in the bin! It's 'orrible looking stuff!!

I still have my original rear spoiler so I must measure it against the fibreglass one.

Well, mine's bonded on now and doesn't look out of place or anything :)

I'll get my decals on tomorrow hopefully too.

Well, it's been a productive day today. I've inspected the bodyshop's work and it's good :) It's nice to have a spoiler that looks good again and a rear bumper that doesn't have a massive chunk of paint missing!

I got my new front spacers on and there's no wobble with these! However, I've figured out that the original studs protruded very slightly from the face of the previous 25mm bolt-ons so that will have caused the wobble as the wheel wasn't actually sitting flush against the spacer!!

As my alloys have that split-rim look, I thought I should get some nice bolts to finish them off.

And I finally got all my spats fitted!! It's a shame the rears are the LWB type, but I still think they look pretty nice :)

Anyhoo, here's how she now looks:

My Car Of The Month right there!! :thumbup1:

There's still plenty left to do yet. I need to decide whether to have an 89 Spec or 99 Spec front end and have a couple more paintjobs done. Then the exterior's finished, at least!

  • Author

I know, Gary! I think I'm leaning towards the 99 Spec... but then I look at her and think the 89 Spec with that little lip really looks good...

She's looking gud! I like that lip on the bumper. Where is that from I need to get one?

That zed looks fantastic now mate, I personally prefer the 89 spec bumper but its your zed and you should modify it to your taste. Either way top job so far!

I honestly have no idea at all! I've never seen one before and a Google search doesn't bring up anything that matches it.

But yeah, it's a nice little finishing touch :)
