For as long as I can remember I would never trust my brakes in an emergency stop situation.

Sat in the car with the engine off I can press the brake pedal a couple of times and it goes hard.

Engine running, the same - although if I apply more pressure I can get the pedal to travel to the floor.

Driving, the same - I can get the pedal to the floor, the car does brake quite quickly but feel there could be more if the pedal wasn't travelling to the floor so easily.

Since having this problem I have changed discs and pads front and rear, changed to braided lines and swapped the master cylinder, and bled numerous times with a the help of an assistant. I am thinking possibly it could be the servo?? What else is there?

Any other vehicle I drive and attempt to push the pedal to the floor the vehicle has already done an emergency stop.

Cheers, Dan

Book stopping distance for a z32 is about the same as a new focus, for a 25 year old cars that's not bad going. The majour limits of the system in terms of braking distance is the ABS efficiency and the amount of grip available. You WILL cook stock brakes on track, regardless of their health or the amount of money spent of "performance pads" etc. I know many members have owned and driven cars that cost a fortune and they understand the stock system is good for what it is, but don't expect miricles it's old.

If you have a z32 that the brakes feel crap on there is a fault somewhere, as said they should feel about the same as a modern focus. Not amazing but solid and effective.

Well the thread got lively I've seen. Lol.

I can cope with the stopping distance, I think..

It's the horrible clunk I get when I stomp the pedal at about half travel, it's as though there is something underneath the pedal. Could those symptoms be servo related?

Dan

is there not anyone on the forum near danny that could go and take a look at his car maybe drive it see if the issue can be diagnosed because its frustrating trying to work out stuff like this by yourself and maybe just need fresh brain and eyes on it and as entertaining as this thread has been to read over its not really helpin the poor guy out with his frustrating brake issue. The stock brakes should be up to the task I have driven both my old tt which did have awful brakes but i was taught to drive and slow down using gears etc so never bothered me much, but on my first zed which was an N/a stock brakes they were really good better than at the time my brand new 2009 nissan qashqai

So I had a Zed with rubbish brakes, well IMO.

Changed the discs and pads all round then bled the system and changed the fluid.

Brakes better but still not great for a performance car.

Front brakes upgraded to K Sport 330mm kit, massive difference, braking system is now tremendous.

Nothing wrong with standard brakes in good order, my original 300 had them and I used to out-brake my mate in his Porsche Cayman at Llandow. Guess it has a lot to do with driver ability aswell.

My second 300 had D2 big brakes and there wasn't much difference to be honest.

OFF TOPIC: Richard I have emailed you, are you still picking up emails going to your 300zx.co.uk address?

That is a key point that is often overlooked. The stock brakes should be more than capable of locking up or activating the abs when in good order. Installing updated brakes won't make any difference to the braking ability or stopping distance, it will only dissipate the heat more efficiently and keep them on form for longer.

In actual fact, if you search for a thread made by Jeff a few years back, bigger brakes can actually decrease braking performance by confusing the abs system. It has a well written, layman's description of how it affects the system. I'll try and dig it out later.

Amen brothers......

....And this is my point - the OP had a concern and the answer is, the problem is easily fixed..... Irrespective of what some might say:wink:
