Been trying all morning to tax car online and the website is just freezing. Tried ringing them and I am met with the response that all their 270 lines are busy, please try again later.

Obviously they themselves are not ready for the new online tax scheme lol.

This will be a disaster. I have to tax my car end of this month im hopping it would have smoothed out by then

LOL... mine has also just run out... need to either SORN or TAX it but with this being the beginning of the new system... I might just have to wait a few days for it calm down...

Just done mine now with great difficulty, kept having the refresh every single stage!

But I thought I was going to have the option to pay monthly, but I could only choose 6 / 12 months,

So im guessing as mine ran out on Sept 30th it still counted as the old system... which is annoying....

Erm, if you needed tax from end of Sept to be valid from 00:00 1st Oct, you could have done it anytime in Sept and if you need tax from end Oct, you still have a month to do it. I know we all get busy and leave things till last moment (and yes, they are having probs with weight of demand) but even so...

Done mine the other week with no probs, what im unsure on is do we still vet reminders? Or do I have to mark on my calander when its due?

I wanted to do the same and got the same options, so after a quick bit of research it will only be possible to pay by monthly direct debit from 1st Nov ????

How feckin stupid is that, guess ill get a refund at the end of the month for the 6 months I just paid and convert to monthly.

I managed to get mine done at 10.30 last night after 2 hours of getting so far and then the damned thing locking up.

So again a quick look on their twitter page revealed that they were receiving 6000 request per minute for renewals and had already processed 250,000 up to that point just yesterday, no wonder it was slow.

Thank gio but got paid today hence trying today!

You can do it monthly but only for tax from 1 Nov.

From 1 October 2014 (5 October if setting up at a Post Office®), Direct Debit will be offered as an additional way to pay for vehicle tax. This will be available for customers who need to tax their vehicle from 1 November 2014:

annually

6 monthly

monthly (12 months tax paid for on a monthly basis)

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes

The logic seems to be that October tax needed to be paid for before October started - so you can't start a Direct Debit now for tax that (being pedantic) needed to be backdated to 00:00. Plus the new system allowing DD for monthly only came in on 1st Oct and you should get tax for Oct in Sept (which is before the new system came in).

Don't get me wrong - I remember the old joke Q: how do you confuse the DVLA? A: ring em up and ask them what day it is. But I'd never wait til this late to get my new tax disk because of the hordes of OAPs painstakingly counting out their pensions in the PO :)

Just done mine online, as I have done for the last few years, with no problems.

Yup....:whistling:

.... DVLA's 'site crashed today under the higher than expected use...!! Lesson is, don't leave your road tax until the last minute......

But I would not worry about it in all honesty; road fund licence is always back-dated to the start of the month, so if you are a couple of days late, they have not actually lost anything. And for those waiting until payday - why not just use your credit card? Yes there is a fee - but is £2.50 really such a big deal?

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Perhaps everybody doesn't have a credit card.
