As title - has anyone had any experience of them?

I'm thinking of replacing Julia's Rav - it would be the TD4, I'd rather it was an auto, 2011 onwards....... Preferably high spec (HSE?), with leather, nav etc.

Thanks!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Ive got one. Mines a manual TD4 2008 Leather - had from new. Also my Dad's got a 2013 Auto HSE.

The Freelander is coming to the end. Being replaced in Jan/Feb by the Discovery Sport.

Isn't that the one that's based around the ranger rover sport, so it's rather heavy for it's engine etc? Heavy might be reliable but it also increases fuel consumption and wear. I don't know that for sure so have a read, just something in the back of my head says that's the case.

No the Freelander 2 isn't based on the Range Rover Sport.

The Range Rover Sport was based on the Discovery chassis initially

The Evoque is based on the Freelander chassis

That's what I thought...!!

And I remember you having one Phil - you picked me up in it when I came up to collect the Zed:wink:

I actually like the Evoque. A lot - but I'm not paying out the thick end of £30k for Julia to scratch it to buggery on the country lanes each day...:nono:

That's what made me think of the Freelander 2 as an alternative...

Yes and that was a while ago. We've had the car six years to it must be doing something right. It's had some reliability problems but I believe the newer ones are better. The HSE spec cars have a good spec. My Dad's has everything including heated steering wheel!

We are going to get rid of ours early next year for something bigger. I do like the look of the new Discovery Sport but it's probably not big enough. We'll probably look at the new XC90 and X5's

After doing nothing since I posted this thread, I've now re-ignited the spark once more - and hope to sort it in the New Year..... So after a some deliberation, I drew up a shortlist:

Freelander 2

Another Rav-4

Honda CRV

BMW X3

I drove the CRV and Freelander 2 a few days ago - and ruled out the Honda. It's actually not good value - I want leather, navigation and DAB; and the higher spec versions (with 4WD) command a premium over the competition, when of comparable age/mileage. Plus the Honda, whilst "nice," is dull, dull, dull - and simply does not feel "premium." It's not pretty either - shame really; as the Honda salesman was a nice chap and in his past career as a mechanic (for Nissan among others), spoke fondly of working on the 300zx back in the day!!!

I'm yet to try the X3 and the newer shape Rav-4; but I really did like the Freelander! It drove very well, seemed quite brisk (in 6-speed manual at least) and felt very well put together; it also had a more prestigious feel - almost like a mini-Range Rover. It was as solid as a "proper" 4x4 should be, yet I reckon Julia will still find it easy to drive.... Once she has driven one and decided for herself, that is:wink:

Or should we both give in to the devil in us and just buy an older, big V8-turbo-nutter-b@stard powered Porsche Cayenne...:devil:

LOL - don't encourage me Bri..... I know Julia is tiny and will no doubt have trouble seeing out of the damn thing, but the V8 beasty is still the one that comes up in all our conversations surrounding her next car....

Out of the four you have shortlisted I would go for the freelander as the crv not bad, x3 just no!!. RAV4 is a good car but has no spare wheel so can take hours to sort out a simple roadside puncture. Freelander has the same Diesel engine as the x3 2.0 diesel but will have a better spec than the x5 for the same money.

Also if you are looking at the ugly porche thing then I would personally look at the Touareg v10, diesel much more usable than the porche!!

Well Fuel has never been so cheap and looks like staying that way untill Putin is toppled:whistling: and one life and all that Richard....

you could also look at vw tiguan or audi q5 in those class/sizes Richard? or a q5 even.

depends where Julia has to park, but the cayenne, touareg, q7 are large beasts to move about in tight spots

I did think of the Tiguan a few months back - but for some reason forgot about it this time! And you are dead right about the Cayenne, Touareg etc; I reckon Julia will find them way too big - and will end up scuffing the sides even more in the lanes...:nono:

Thanks for the advice mate! Interesting about the Freelander sharing the BMW engine - although it is a 2.2 TDi in the Freelander 2; not a 2.0..... I also like the look of the Touareg over the Porsche - as fast as that V8 beast is, the Touareg has less of a toss-pot image:wink:

It isn't. The Freelander engine is based on a Ford unit from when Ford owned JLR.
