Hi all,

Well, I finally got a 300ZX! I'd been scouting around for a couple of months, and got gazumped a few times too, but I'm now the proud owner of a UK manual 300ZXTT. (Yes proud, Clarkson!)

First thing to say is, I'll be sending my cheque to Craig today or tomorrow!

Secondly, I'd like to apologise to Jeff TT and Vijay for in-the-end not taking either of them along to see the motor. In my defence it was a long long way from Jeff, and very short notice too. Will probably come back to haunt me ;)

Finally, I'm now keen to get the car as sweet as I can! So far I've noticed only two things about it that I'd like some advice on:

1. The seal around the top of the driver's window lets in a few drops of water when it's wet. Anything easy I can do about this?

2. More significantly, during a quick run (private road of course!), I noticed that at about 100MPH, the car starts to emit a constant medium/high pitched whine. It goes away again if you drop the speed. Seems to come from under the car, towards the back so I'm guessing it's something to do with the prop-bearing..? There doesn't seem to be any accompanying vibration etc. Does anyone know what this is, how significant it is, and what cost I'm looking at to fix it?

Thanks all!

Russ.

Well done Russ,

I,ve had mine a couple of months now and I'm loving every minute!

I had a few leaky probs(with the car,not me!!),I used Autoglym bumper care on the rubber and dont forget to take the targa roof panels off and check the drainage holes arent blocked.

All this advice I got from other members on this forum, what a good place this is.

Cheers,

F.T.

Yup welcome to the club. They're LOVELY cars eh?

I often get a whining noise when I go over 100mph. I traced it to the sphincter of whatever passenger I happen to have with me at the time!!!:D :D :D

heheheeh :D very funny.

I think most of our Zed's let in water from the T bar's at one point or another. The first thing I would reccomend is that you check the door is aligned correctly, I have a little bit of damage under the front wing, can only be seen from under the car, but it has misaligned the driver door by milimeters, which in turn lets maybe a coupl eof drips an hour in through the top of the window in vey heavy rain.

The noise ?. What rpms and psi turbo pressure does this occur at ?

  • Author

Seems like the t-tops are fine - just letting in some spots from a specific point towards the front of the window. Not as much of a worry as the moaning:

PSI - I've no idea although my gut tells me it's nothing to do with this (I could well be wrong!)

Doesn't seem to be related to RPMs either, just speed. Don't think it's coming from the front of the car either. sounds like it's directly below me!

I need to do some more investigation though - I only noticed it while driving it back from the seller! (I just happened to drive onto some private roads on the way, you understand!)

Any ideas?!

Russ.

Russ,

Congrats on your new purchase - I've seen your posts on here and z-club, plus the massive response they prompted (not!) ... so well done for sticking with it.

BTW, I'm on my second 300 now and both mine have let in a bit of water on the drivers door, once it gets really sodden .. I'd resigned myself to it being a bit of an age/design-flaw problem.

So, dish the dirt then, what spec/colour/age did you get in the end, and how did you find it?

CheerZ,

John.

welcome to the club m8 :)

iv got to say - my T tops dont let in any water through the seals. just lucky i guess ;)

anyways - welcome to the house of fun :D

yeah mine leak like hell, seems the drainage rubber down the a piller is squashed at the top, u can get black silicone sealer, ive heard thats the best to use, havent tried it yet but gonna investigate. mine makes all kinds a funny noises, strange honking noise from under the bonnet when i boot it. kinda like a strangled goose.

Is it true that Turbo honk can only be cured by dump valves.

If so, That means we change goose honk for snake hiss.

My names not Noah, get the dam animal noises out of my car :D .

me personally think dump valves belong on r5 turbos and scort s1 bo's, what causes the noise, is it the waste gate actuator, all i know is with this current weather i dont use the power button on the autobox, i get a strange vibration above 50 mph too, cant afford a full bush kit at the mo tho, 99 spec bumper is calling

its the recirc valves (standard "dump valves") that go weak iirc

Thanks for all the support and encouragement people!

The dirt:

1990 (H) UK Manual Twin Turbo. Metallic Grey. Cloth interior. 90K miles. Completely stock. The fullest darn service history I've ever seen and a stack o' bills to boot. No weird noises from the engine (so far!!) and drives fantastically. Incredibly light power steering though!

So far I haven't driven it too much. I'll admit it: I'm afraid of driving it in the fog!! Hope to take it for a decent run over the weekend though :)

I'm sure I'll be back with plenty more stoopid questions.

Russ.

Good purchase, my man ....

Particularly good selection of colour (not that I'm biased).

Here's to a large grin at the weekend, then:D :D

John.
