I want to change the old bulbs in the cluster to white led who was done this? what led bulbs do I need and how do you do this

Featured Replies

There are a few ways of doing it. I've replaced the bulbs with LEDs. Just regular T5 or T10 iirc. I want to do a better job though. I think Mondo or phutumusch has put LED strips behind which look a lot better.

do you have a pic of your car at night with them on

so fitting leds will look the same as it was

There's a number of Guides on this in the FAQ area

I can never find what am looking for in FAQ

Off the top of my head i think there are 4 or 5 T10 bulbs and one T10 bulb for the low fuel.

I did fit red 5 smd ones but i've gone back to stock filament ones as the clear diffusers that are scattered about are designed for them, not saying led or such like, don't work, just that i didn't really see a notable difference.

I only have these 4 or 5 stock bulbs fitted for illumination of the needles as i have glo dials in mine.

Groover as fit a flexible led strip or strips and believe it works well, i would suggest buy yourself some of this and that, then have a trial and error play about with positions etc.

Btw, on early series cars you pick up 12v lights on power with the two screws at the bottom in the centre on the back, cluster dimming switch will work if you pick up here.

think I would be happy with just getting rid of the yellow look of the stock bulbs so white led is a waste of time then

I have the SMD wedge type bulbs in (4 of for main lights) it spreads the light around pretty well. Cost about £8 for all 4.

Remove dash cluster, unscrew the bulb holders, pull out the T10 (501) wedge bulbs out od holders, replace with the type you have bought. Refit everything.

I have similar to these fitted :http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10x-HID-ERROR-FREE-CANBUS-W5W-T10-501-5-SMD-XENON-WHITE-LED-SIDE-LIGHT-BULB-/201169288006?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2ed69fbb46

Just be aware that if the bulbs you buy are too long, they won't fit.

ok then will give them a go so the ones in the link look pretty long

Yeah, I can't guarantee they are 100% the ones I used. My car is in bits around the in-laws so I can't even go check for you. Sorry.

I'm pretty sure it's them I used though, as I had spare ones left over from the sidelights (bought a pack of 6) so I used them.

The strip of LED's like Mondo has done is the best way to get the best dispersed light.

will have punt on them ebay ones mite be ok for what am thinking

I have no complaints about mine. And for £6 you can't go wrong.

Just a pain taking cluster in and out each time. Although I can change them in 20 mins flat now, as I have done it so many times changing colours, bulb types, and 3 different KMH-MPH convertors!

Mine are Red at the moment, but I will be changing to white during the winter.

will try them then I see how I go

Those 5 x smd bulbs are the ones i have used a lot around the car, a lot of failures though, out of the 5 on each bulb you may find only 2 or 3 work after a while and some can flicker, worth a try though as they disperse light in all directions, of course when they're all working !!

If i didn't have glow dials i would be looking into fitting perhaps 2 x flexible led strips to flood the area with light, to give a crisp fresh white not yellowish look, areas of these strips can also fail but will less noticeable.

EDIT: Don't forget when fitting those smd bulbs in the bulb holders they are polarity sensitive, so if they don't work the bulb itself or the bulb holder will need turning 180 degrees, so test before you assemble !!

I see ok thanks for the info will give it a bash in the week

Do a facebook search on RGS performance. An Australian Aus300zx forum member, Rob260 offers a full LED kit to replace the entire interior illumination (dash cluster, ignition, window illumation, side pods, interior illumination).

Having followed a forum tech section write-up on 1 of my Z's that involved disassembling the existing T10 lamps and replacing with LED and soldered resistor combinations and then fitting 1 of Rob's interior kits on a second, can say that the latter offers same, of not better illumination, with much less headache (simple plug and play swap out).

cheers

Michael
