Do I have to remove these two screws to change the air filters?

At a guess yes, looks like you need to continue stripping apart until you can get some mole grips on them.

I did just that! Got things stripped out & got mole grips out!

The long screw at the front got the same treatment, but the front of my air filter cover,

where this long screw goes through is broken.

The best thing you can do is to junk the stock airbox and fit an A'pexi (or similar) cone filter. The stock item is quite restrictive. You'd also be able to hide your HID balasts a little easier then too. :)
