I need a new job and quickly now........

I work in a residential home....

Just had my 'on call' manager having a go at me for calling her in to cover as i needed to leave work on time and they tried to make me stay an extra couple of hours......

apparently, I should have stayed and not bothered coming home, leaving my own kids with a babysitter expecting me back at 22.30 and me not getting home till after midnight....

She actually lectured me and said staff need to stay, what if it had been a major incident..... I just said, " Isn't that what 'on call' are paid extra for?"..... didn't go down well..... lol

I am solo sick of being expected to stay late 'Unpaid', write reports after a shift 'Unpaid', come in on a day off to help out and if I don't get moaned at or given bad shifts as punishment....

I am also now expected to do sleep in's, in a small room with no windows or ventilation that stinks of a recent sewage leak and damp..... Bearing in mind I am asthmatic.......

The owner of the company has refused to fit any ventilation and isn't bothered that the room allows no air circulation and will at best make staff sick......

I don't get paid if I am off sick or injured by a resident....... recently had dislocated thumb from one and was told no work, no pay......

I am also being forced to work at another home that the company own due to their error in calculating the day to day running costs and staffing......

They have told me that all staff will do 2 weeks there on a rolling rota basis, yet I did 2 weeks and then they decide to send a few others for a day at a time, then expect me to go back and do yet more shifts there....

I was employed at my place of work, near my house and not at this new place, this is causing me no end of childcare issues picking up my children before the nursery closes at 6pm....

Also my monthly rota is not being issued till a day or 2 before the old one runs out.... I can't plan anything, even childcare or doctors appointments......

This rota for last month was even changed over 8 times in that month, meaning each day I need to check if tomorrow had changed shift times, days off, etc......

I am at my wits end now and just feel so low and worn down I want to walk out....... but have a family and bills to pay.....

Can't take much more as feel like I am having a melt down and going to lose it at work and walk out soon........

Sorry...... loads of things that have got to me........ Applied for 4 or 5 jobs in different things, from store manager for toolstation to facilities help desk advisor at NHS trust.....

Need a career change with reasonable money and hours so I can see my young boys more.....

As my 6 year old keeps crying and asking me not to go to work as he misses me being at home and doing things with him like homework or just spending time with me and me not falling asleep on the sofa from exhaustion.....

Any advice or words of wisdom???

Sounds like they are taking he absolute piss mate, i would look for another residential home, if you are happy in that line of work, they cant all be that bad to work in.

Its difficult balancing the work and family life to suit, but on occasion needs must. Does the wife not work or able to help out more? Sorry not prying into your personal life lol

Cheers Gary and Groover, I feel like I have done my time with 7 years fostering and now the last year at this place...... Feeling burn't out....

I think it is career change time......

The wife works part time, as she gave up area manager position at 27 years old..... she ran 5 River island stores and was very good at her job..... had our 2 boys and no longer wants the management role....

Just wants to do a bit of work and spend time with our boys.....

My turn to go to work and earn as worked at home fostering for 7 years.... and stay at home dad all my boys life..... lol

Sorry to hear that your employer is treating you like shit mate.

My other half works as a support worker with mentally handicapped men in a supported living home.

Her employer treats her colleagues and her self like shit too, their monthly rotas change from day to day and also like yours is not issued till the last minute.

One week they will give her well below her hours then over triple her hours the following week.

She has been hit, bit, slapped, kicked, spat on etc, only last night she came home and told me one of the guys had literally punched her in the face while she was doing his shoelace up!

As far as the conditions of your sleep in room is concerned, there has got to be health and safety issues of sleeping in what sounds like a storage room, you should contact citizens advice.

Not getting time with your kids sucks, I had to give up a very well paid job 7 years ago because I was working 12 to 16 hours a day and pretty much missed out on my boys first 3 years.

Now I'm in a shit job that I hate and earn unbelievably crap wages!

Keep applying for jobs mate, they are out there but it could take a while before you get one, I've been applying for months now without even one reply.

I've even been trying convince the other half to contemplate emigration to Canada!

Just keep your chin up mate, things can only get better!

Sorry to hear this. Take a little time (if you can find it!) Sit down and write down all of the jobs you might like like to do.

Narrow it down factoring in local vacancies, logistics, ability, (most people are capable of more / wider roles than they think they are)

Start searching and come up with a plan for yourself.

in the meantime, try to clear your mind and do your current job as best you can under the circumstances. Keep a wee

notebook/diary of your working days and note down events, times, names, specifics (so that you are accurate if you ever need to give an account of what Is happening/going wrong etc) -also worth noting any positive experiences (if there are some) just to remind you that it might not be completely sh*t.

Get your plan to change career up and running and bounce ideas off people you know/know you - other people are good at spotting strenghts and skills you aren't really aware of.

good luck, I hope you get sme progress.

Constructive dismissal comes to mind .......

Sorry to hear Russ! Sounds shitty.

First things first however, you need to check the content and small print of your contract thoroughly to be able to see the extent of any misuse of power on their part. Make sure you haven't signed away anything that says 'If you're required to do X then we expect you to do X at short notice' etc etc; as spurious as the wording may seem, it can be used as a get-out clause.

If there is nothing within your contract that can be used against you, then go and have a chat with the people at the CAB. Many of them are ex solicitors/magistrates etc and will have come up against instances like this before and should be able to point you in the right direction.

Well I don't have a contract...... Someone apparently put it in the office for my attention at some point a few months after I started the job and it disappeared..... (someone took it who wasn't me)

Nothing signed since I started, no company handbook either..... All I have is the offer of employment and subsequent emails from manager about employment being at one of the company premises and not having to work at the other one....

Not sure who it would benefit not having a contract, me or them?

I have started logging the problems, such as late rota's, staff working 24hr shifts - 6 hours away from work then doing a further 16 hours, health and safety breaches (loads, so I quit as health and safety responsible), Fire regulation breaches ( so I quit as fire responsible, faulty fire doors, locked fire exits, etc.)

I feel like I am moaning about everything, but have realised I am just noticing everything wrong now and not burying my head in the sand like the management....

I feel as though I am being 'managed out' or pushed...... Constantly asked to do things they know I shouldn't do, like yesterday asked to dispose of washing machine from upstairs laundry room and carry it downstairs on my own. I refused and told them it was a 2 person job under manual lifting regulations, I then got moaned at all day and another worker was asked to do the same thing and he actually did it on his own. He then got easy day with nice jobs, I got all the more difficult jobs......

Then this same worker (that does 24hr shifts), lied and tells supervisor I said something when I didn't, luckily another staff member heard what was said and backed me up.....

This same worker then asked me to mend their old iPhone like the one I did the week before for him..... I replaced the screen and back cover for £10...... This time I just refused and said I would normally charge him £40...... Cheek after lying about me......

I just keep being told,"If you don't like it here then get another job!"

I Applied for a few more jobs last night..... Service advisor at main dealership ( done this role before ), even looking at starting up own venture..... Just not sure doing what??......lol

Rewrote my CV and today I am going to look again..... Shift tonight 14.45 - 22.15...... YAY!!!!!

Thanks for the advice and support Si, Dave, guinnal and everyone...... Need to win lottery of sell everything I have to sell...... need to pay road fund licence at end of month for the Z....

Talk to Citizens advice about Constructive dismissal ... You would have quite a good case

Ask for your contract to be given to you its your legal right to have one then you will know where you stand.

Am I not better off with no signed contract...... surely they then can't hold me to anything if they haven't informed me of it???

Looks that way - but DO NOT do anything rash mate..... Whilst things tend to go the employee's way at many tribunals, walking out and claiming constructive dismissal should always be the last resort.....

Maybe, but not always....

Some good advice has been offered already; and from what you are saying, your employer may be imposing unreasonable demands on you. If you have your employment offer letter to hand - along with a copy of the contract that has supposedly been put to you for signature - please feel free to e-mail it to me. Give me your number as well - perhaps I might be able to help and advise; I am not bad with HR related matters...
