Hi Chaps.

My Z steering wheel sits off centre whilst driving straight. Wasn't too fussed because I've got to change the TRE's and tension rod bushes so thought would sort by getting the tracking done when I've finished.

However, whilst playing with Datascan, when I hold the wheel dead straight, the HICAS steering angle sensor shows out by a few degrees.

Now I don't think tracking will sort this will it, because they'll just track the car with the wheel straight, but the HICAS sensor will still read out which I believe will turn off HICAS as it will read as constantly turning slightly?

So, I guess my wheel as been removed and put back on wrong at some time? So do I need to remove my wheel and reposition it on the straight whilst the rack displays dead straight with Datascan? Then get the tracking done after the suspension work.

Any thoughts, does that sound about right?

Cheers.

I'm certainly no expert on that but it does sound like as good plan.

you might need a puller tool to get it off... I uses some bolts and a small chunk of wood and made my own puller..

Do you have a standard wheel or after market? either way once the wheel is off and boss if after market wheel you can see the hicas sensor, see if it looks to be in the correct position, do you have any issues with the indicators cancelling?

Ok here are the positions you need to know, all the pictures were taken whilst observing the wheel position and the zero point for the hicas sensor.

Pic 1 shows wheel straight ahead,

Pic 2 shows wheel centre section off

Pic 3 shows wheel off and view of the sensor and the relative position for the sensor arc position

Pics 4 shows zero point on the ConZult or similar

If you match all the positions and you still getting a wrong value on the diagnostic screen then it must be an issue with the hicas sensor position.

Thanks for the chat Jeff.

All sorted now, indeed it was an issue with the HICAS steering sensor itself.

I had to get Datascan to read 0 degrees then remove the sensor pickup from the back of the sensor unit, then turn the rotating section till it was 'straight' - horn connector and 12 o clock. Then refit sensor pickup and recheck the reading. Had to do this a few times as the sensor pickup is very sensitive and alters 1 degree or 2 very easily. Once satisfied with a 0 degree reading at dead 12 o clock I refitted the sensor to the steering shaft that I'd already got as straight as possible. The wheel now sits level and the HICAS computer now reads straight.

Now I can get my tracking done to a straight steering wheel and all should be good!
