Well I took the green zed down to Jeff in mid-march for some niggling problems to be fixed, oil leak, ‘clunk’ in the transmission, noisy lifter and asked him to have a look at how bad the rust was that was starting to bubble through the rear quarter panels and especially some that had come to light when having the arches rolled for the Rota wheels. There was also some scuffing on the nearside rear where a tyre had blown and nearly come off the rim, and the paint had been scraped off the front nearside wing by a supermarket trolley. I’d also got the metal interior door lock thingy that I wanted him to fit.

Whist it was down there, two supposedly electric seats came up for offer and I contacted Mondo to retrim the seating, gaiters and steering wheel. When the seats arrived the passenger one was manual, so big thanks to Onslow for helping out with a spare electric passenger seat.

That work can be seen on this thread……

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?176705-TonyB-s-Interior-Retrim!

I also needed the corner of the bonnet straightening, by the hinge, after it had flown straight up back onto windscreen. This happened when having to use a battery pack to get the car home after the alternator failed, so the bonnet wouldn’t close. I was only doing 15mph and all was good until a bloody bus went past doing 40 mph and upset all the airflow and BAM! The bonnet flew right back against the windscreen.

I then got a 99 spec bumper, courtesy of Rata2ie. Delivered it to Jeff and he said give it to Guy when he does the bonnet and let him prep it and paint it

Well Jeff found the oil leaks and replaced the four cam end oil seals, the rear crank oil seal, and the clunk was solved with a new lightweight flywheel and clutch.

He took it up to Guy’s to do the bonnet and check out the rust and prep the bumper. For those of you who remember Zedworld at the farm, Guy was in the first unit, always tinkering with old MGs and Sprites. He’s very old school, making all metal by hand, shaping it, curving it, and then fitting it.

I subsequently got a 99 spec Rear spoiler from Magnum. This was delivered to Guy who took the original spoiler off and welded up the holes left and then queried what was the mounting position of the 99 spoiler ? Hence the posting last weekend and thanks a lot a Roobarb for helping out

The following pics show what we found and how it was fixed.

Thanks Daffy

didn't do the work..... Just had to pay for it !

There'll more yet when the spoiler and bumper are done

No I didn't know and Jeff was surprised as well. It first showed up really bad when the guy rolled the arches and we thought if was that but when it went up to Guys and he gao on his stands he saw the rear sills and we told him to do them ! Just as well because that has got all all the rusted metal out. He's done a super job of a the subtle flare to get the Rotas in as well The pictures don't it justice.

The main thing I'm pleased about is that there wasn't anything rusted in the main structure or chassis Having the bottom of car covered in oil probably prevented that !

He's removed all the rust, and is undersealing everything everwhere whils he's got the bumper of because although he's said he had to do quite a few rear bumper mounts he says he only wants to do them once !

It's funny because I'd arranged to have a complete repaint done in about six months, but with this work every panel has been painted, wasn't the intention, just the way it worked out

That coupled with the new interior should give a completely new lease of life and then I've got the engine that Jimmer has to refurb......

how did you go about flairing the arch? have you some more pics of that ? looks good

Looks really nice Tony, until recently, you just dont realise how much actually goes into the bodywork process until you get down to the nitty gritty. She is going to be stunning once more

I know. From the pictures of the outside it was just amazing to see the insides ! But Guy is that sort of old school worker. If it needs doing do it properly and I'll make the metal to fit how you want it Not many with those skills nowadays are there ?

Hi Dan

I think he did it when he cut out the rolled arches and before welding the new metal He sort of made the arched metal from the inside of the rear wing and then made the new metal to fit that shape and keep the bottom flat bit

I'll put up some more pics later because from some angles it looks very sharp and others it looks subtle I haven't seen it yet but when I get it back I'll do some more pics

I know I need to roll the lip on my arch when I fit the wheels I have 10j wheels to go the rear. what size wheels on the rear are you fitting and what off set

They're Rota GTR wheels 18x9.5 with a 30 offset we had to have the arches rolled because otherwise the tyre was rubbing when the coilovers were lowered

These were originally on mine and there now on Jan's zed The rears are 18 x 9.5 with an offset of 35 Running with standard shocks

Think it's a green zed thing to rust like that, mine was terrible when I got it,

Looks great, guess that's what mine should look like if I hadn't got carried away with carbon bits...

Cant wait for new new leather retrimmed thicker steering wheel and then get back !

You only really need to roll the lip up a little. I am running 19 x 9.5 @ +25 with a 275 tyre.

I mite get away with just the lip the rear is a 10j thinks its off set 30

Looking good!!

Has anyone done a write up on flaring arches, would like to know more about it

  • Author

I'll ask Jeff

As I said above, I think it was done fron inside the rear wing when the metal was cut away. Remember that the rear quarter is double skinned so normally that woudln't be any good
