Quaife ATB and 4.10 Leader gear set

Hi all,

Does anyone else have this combination? Or any of the above?

I've had all the above installed about 3 years ago but not used it due to the build not being completed.

Now ive installed the differential along with all the suspension yesterday to my new Z and took the car out for a drive!

Wow what a difference the combination makes but with the performance I also get a loud whine like straight cut gears.

I know the Quaife and leader gear set will make some noise but not as much as I'm getting!

I've read the set up should get quieter once it's run in bit nothing states what to do or for how long?

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Thanks Dan

I know this is a PPG gearbox but my setup sounds just like it

I was looking it to that gear set seen a post on a us forum say the say as you same issue

The leader gears can cause the whine, it's to do with the backlash when installing I believe

Yes there is a bit of a whine but nothing serious. At a guess I expect they may not have been shimmed properly

zx quaife diff and 4.10 leader gear set:

Here is a quick video...its at its loudest when you are fully off the throttle which is pretty much though out this video.

Ill be able to get a better video when I'm back in the country.

What do you guys think?

Cheers Dan

Have you had a look on TT.net? google -> leader gears noise site:http://www.twinturbo.net

One thing that comes up is noise with solid/hard bushings:

http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/forums/general/view/2269441/410-Leadergears-feedback-re-gear-whine-I-am.html

Also correct setup for pinion depth, pinion bearing preload, backlash and carrier bearing preload:

http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/forums/general/view/2281467/Differential-gear-noise-semi--dissertation.html

Not the same company, however the setup principles will remain the same:

Hope this helps.

Edit: this is the installation quide by Richmond (they make the Z32 gears for Leader):

As Andrew says, you need to look at the backlash setup really. If you hve poly bushes you get a bit more noise, a bit more again going to solid bushes. I have solid subframe and diff bushes with a stock diff and it's not as loud as yours as a comparison.

Choices are live with it or get the diff out and setup again

Cheers for the info guys ill look in to it. I have solid sub frame bushes and poly bushes though out so this could be the answer.

Thanks
