Hi all,

was just wondering: seeing as they offer pretty similar performance, and a good ZX can be had for a little over £6k, is the Supra worth another £3k on top of that? Anyone driven both and is able to comment on how they compare? Thanks guys

Hold on, considering I have seen a stock Skyline beat, RX-7 NSX and Misti EVO round a track I dont think that a Supra would be much of a problem.

Hahaha how true...the majority of new younger MKIV Supra owners only seem to be interested in fitting neons and flamer kits to their cars, not interested in performance at all...it is a real shame as they are very nice fast cars. If this is what you want to do...buy a Supra you will not be alone in tactless 'show' mods. :rolleyes:

 

I have seen some Zs lately (one very nice looking one at Nth Weald) that I have been very impressed with. I really like the styling of the Z although I do think the MKIV Supra does look more 'modern' I would imagine the Z would get more looks.

 

Both are very nice cars at the end of the day...

 

But I think for me a Skyline is on the next Xmas list to myself

So, aesthetic preferences aside, I kinda get the feeling that while a ZX will be cheaper to buy, it made need more work, and the more expensive supra may be more reliable. I'm sure someone is going to pop out and totally disagree here: i guess it depends on the state of the car when you buy it. Personally, i think they both look good, the zx looks more like something you can tune and add stuff on to, while the supra seems more in a final stage of design, and you don't really want to stick on guages and things. that's just my opinion though

The final say is yours. Both are fantastic cars, both are great performers. The running costs of the cars I think will be very simalir.

You have heard from both ZX and a couple of Supra owners and both of them have said they are both great cars.

If you get a 92 or 91 ZX you can get it on classic insurance, but I dont know if your age will effect it.

 

I dont know what year Supra you are looking at but the first year a car is out tends to be the worse. Look at the new MINI, has the most recalls in history. The 89 Z has a few niggly problems but most of the troubled parts would have been changed by now.

 

 

You have to come back and tell us what you are going for.

Go out and drive all the cars... Well, not ALL of them, per se...that would take months...but take an Auto Zed, a manual Zed and a Supra out for a spin. See which you get on with the best and go from there.

 

Whatever you chose and both are good cars, with their own following, you're the one that's going to be driving it day in / day out and paying for it.

I don't know whereabouts you live...but if you want to test drive some Supras one of the best dealers is the Japanese Import Centre in Surrey. They usually have a large stock of MKIV Supras which they will let you test drive.

 

Spent 4 consecutive saturdays down there test driving various different MKIV Supras. Try and drive a Jap AND a UK if you can as the insurance for the Jap cars can be rather steep, and I would strongly recommend driving a decatted Supra as they are totally different to the stock car, when I drove a stock MKIV I wasn't very impressed with the performance in relation to the amount of money which was going to be spent purchasing the car (15k-20k) but luckily a Supra came along which had some mods done to it (invoices total over 7k without the wheels)

 

I would never buy a NA MKIV Supra either, far too slow, I actually drove one just to see what it was like after buying the MKIV and I was shocked as our MKIII Supra seemed to be just as fast. Also a lot of NA MKIV Supra owners seem to sell them for the Twin Turbo version.

 

Shame I haven't driven a Z though, because until you drive both it is very hard to give an opinion for both sides.

Ajay, I want to go for a manual, as I don't like autos, especially the thought of having just four gears, besides, I have large, muscular legs, so I should be ok in traffic and the like. having sai dthat, at the motorshow, i had a sit in a 911 GT2, and the clutch was the stiffest ba5tard thing you've ever tried to move. Driving down an empty road would be hard ebough, let alone in traffic.

 

Supra girl, I'm in central london, so surrey isn't too far out. I am aiming for a Uk car, as you do get more power as stock, and that funky bonnet scoop. But, god, I've been browsing autotrader, and finding Uk manual versions of either car is like trying to find real meat in a Big mac.

Clutch would be hard on the GT2 cos the engine wasnt running ;)

I sat in an M reg Z with a manwell box and pushed the clutch and it was like it was set in concrete.

 

Somebody told me on here that they are servo/power assisted so when the engine is running they are alot easier to depress.

 

Bit like the way yer power stearing works.

btw zed autobox rox, specially j spec with the option for power, dont know what it does but it sounds cool and its instantn power and u dont have to worry about gear change, i just put me foot down and grin

Beermonster, it sounds good, but I'm not really an auto person. I'm not even a fan of power steering, though i can make do without it on my Saxo, though it's a blessing on bigger cars

Seb - not sure about Supras, as I've never looked for one, but UK TT Zed's are as rare as rocking horse poo. :) It took me nigh on 10 months to find my one, after looking at umpteen sheds. There are many, many poorly looked after examples out there, in respect to Zeds, but only a very few decent cars.

 

Set aside at least 6 months to looking. It's tedious and frustrating, when all you want to do is get out there and drive one (:D) but it's defnitely worth it in the end. :)

I cant believe some of the shit on this forum, really puts newbies like myself off paying the £20 if all we get is people baiting and slagging each other off.
