So I bought a 2000 Corsa (B) 1.2 16v that needs a new head gasket.... For £170 (75k miles not bad condition). Plan is to get my hands dirty and fix it up myself then use as a daily.

It's in bits in the garage and I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm plodding along!! Good job I got a pc set-up in here so I can use my friend constantly (google is your friend).

Just about to take the cams out but got to remove some sh!te to get to the timing belt and align that first... I think... :scared:

Just done a timing chain on a 3 cylinder Corsa, the room around the engine was refreshing but you do need the cam and crank locking tools to do it correctly and safely.

Jeff TT

The older one is not to bad to do, and ive done them without locking tools but like jeff said safer and easier with them...

make sure u get a new chain cover gasket, the newer ones the diesel in the corsa, combos etc is a pig, end up with sump and side of the engine off and they need the locking tools cause the rocker cover holds the cams in,

Good luck...

Cheers for the replies guys, you make it sound so easy!!

I need some help if you can....

I've got the cover off, air box out the way etc, took the radiator off to drain the coolant and create more room (big clumsy hands).

What now? I guess I have to use a block of wood and jack to hold the engine and remove the mount??

Then remove the timing chain (do I need to position this TDC first or can that be done when putting it back on?)

Does the sump need to be removed first? I'd like to clean the dirty oil and coolant out of this before putting new oil in?

I'm going to pick up the gasket set and timing tools then will just come back and clean what I've got for now... Can you help? as you can see im in aq pickle lol

...this might help

What you need and will always need is tools. Halfords do some great sets for good money that cone with lifetime warranties.

Is it an all aluminium engine?

  • Author

Been looking at that cheers znut, just on my phone... but now i've set up PC should be easier.

Been to halfords so many times. got one of their tool sets but they leave out all the usefull ones!! I've used two sockets and an adjustable spanner... and a flat head screw driver a surprising amount.....

Lol, you will need a torque wrench to reassemble

Thankfully I've got an uncle with a fair few years of tool collection and his mates have even more... Going to buy the basics for myself and borrow the expensive parts for now.

I've got to fix it/finish taking it apart before I start putting it back together anyway!!!

So someones already had it apart by the looks of things, paint marked bolts on throttle bodie and new clips on those hoses. Possibly replaced the head gasket and then it overheated still anyway. Fun fun fun.

This could be a long and embarrassing one :sweatdrop:

No need for embarrassment. Check the block and head are square once seperated, or you will be doing it again quite quickly.

so there are a lot more parts off today.

Stupid question... I have taken the sump off, when I lay under and look up where the sump was there is a grated cover. What is said cover?

Also I need to take the cams out. Do I have to get it at TDC first?

Oh boy :smash:

The mesh you can see is the hole on the end of the oil pick up pipe, the mesh is the first line of defense filter. Set the engine at TDC and check your timing marks, depending on how much work you are doing it will aid in re-assembly and also the cams wont be under any tension from valve springs.

ok so a bolt just snapped in the sump. Now what? :censored:  :mad2:

Sadly yes, don't worry I've done the same thing twice. Very similar, dropped one of the rocker cover bolt into the block, got away with it both times, but a sweat few minutes ensued.

Just another delay on getting this done got to wait till morning to get a replacement bolt!

Patience.....
