Since it's been 25 years since the inception of the Z32, I've compiled some....

...interesting and notable things from the same year; some fun, some cool and some horrible:

In 1989 Motorola had just launched their new 'MicroTACH'. An analogue phone priced at around £2,000 each!

In 1989, Nintendo also launched their new 'Game Boy'.

Nearly 200 people were killed in a horrific plane crash that was captured on video in Sioux City, Iowa when a DC-10 attempted to make an emergency landing after all its flight controls failed. Any seasoned travelers will remember the aged DC-10. I in fact went through a harrowing experience over the Great Lakes in the northern United States when the DC-10 I was flying in caught fire.

Sky TV - spearheaded by Rupert Murdock started broadcasting for the first time in 1989

Nearly 100 people die in the Hillsborough disaster.

Nearly 100 people die in the Marchioness disaster - pleasure boat that sank in the River Thames after a barge ploughed into it.

The 'Cold War' with the Russians officially ends.....although some say, it's back again! Note Hungary in the 'Warsaw pact'. As a family, we drove all the way to Hungary in 1990 as I have family in Budapest and the surrounding areas and we were required to carry visas and report to the police station every time we moved around the country; nobody had phones in their homes, only coin-op public phones in the street, people would queue to use it and queue for half an hour for a loaf of bread.

...and by that same fate in '89 the Berlin Wall would start to come down.

The Tiananmen Square protests and subsequent masacre were in the news for months in '89

George Bush senior (the first one) becomes president of the United States.

Daniel Radcliffe was born!

danielradcliffe.jpg

In 1989, the top ranking film was Indianna Jones and the Last Crusade!

Indiana-Jones-and-the-Last-Crusade11.jpg

...also released was Back to the Future Part II

Black Box and 'Ride on Time' was released and spent 6 weeks at No.1

Last but not least and something if we didn't have, we wouldn't be on here all talking about, the world wide web was invented in 1989!

Cool - I remember all of that (Except Daniel Radcliff of course - no idea who the feck he was back then... )....

......I was 19 years old and had just managed to wreck my F-reg Astra GTE (heaven knows how I afforded a nearly new hot hatch) swerving to avoid some numpty in an RS Turbo on my side of the road.....

.....And I had just replaced it with a (then) new-ish Cavalier 2.0 CDi. I remember seeing this "New Japanese Supercar" and thinking just how much better it looked than my boss's Porsche 944.... Those were the days:cool:

From what I remember they were struggling to shift cars at the time. The salesman laughed at my offer and said something along the lines of I will give you 3k against this .

Which is what I payed for mine, some-things are worth waiting for , for all the bits I need ....... yes you guessed it there's Barclaycard :clown:

I'd rather have had the Senator! :)

R Vitesse was far superior Simon, in every respect. Owned both while I was travelling to Glasgow to the Diamond Hangar in Stansted for my job.

Rover was more reliable and powerfull. MPG was debatable ? Senator was more high maintenance. AA card was a must with a Senator !

I still prefer the Senny. Always preferred the styling. Never been a fan of Rover. :)

Nice compilation! Busy year I was born in! It's amazing how much things change, yet stay the same.

I was 17 driving around like a mad man in my blue 2.0gl Cortina with fake ghia badges attached, 16" Cobra alloys, 6 spot lights nailed to the front and a stereo as big as FunkiSi's ego ;) loved that car. 2 years later I spotted my first 300zx driven by a disabled man, sprayed gold, with a full veilside kit and looked like a spaceship, I knew one day I would own 3 of them :D

Lol, Gary! Bringing back memories :) mine were Rally giants :) couldn't afford cibies, thinking back I had 4 rally giants between the headlights and 4 rectangle spotties(fogs) either side below the bumper line, lol, I was just googling for a picture of something similar but don't.think anyone was as stupid as me, lol. I remember using all my lights to illuminate the garage door without the engine running, and it instantly discharged my battery lol
