Cant really do a search for this as its throwing up completely the wrong results every time i search, so time for an explanation, (seems that this year is the year for problems to arise on my zed)

Hard to explain this so ill try my best, the steering wheel its self shifts left to right, only by around 1/4 an inch, ive narrowed it down to 2 metal bushes, either side of the main shaft, directly behind the interior panel under the steering wheel, seems as though my steering wheel is no longer sitting in them correctly, ive undone the bolts to try and see if i can adjust the fitments, but if the steering wheel is sitting where it can not move, i cant get the bushes to line up with studs to fit the bolts and tighten down on. the service manual mentions nothing of these bushes

Problem area, highlighted in red, the bushes are allowing the wheel to shift left and right.

Did a tech on this problem years ago, the triangle shaped inserts that will move about if the two 12 mm securing are undone would of originally been fixed to the steering column bracket by small round plastic pegs, over time these break and the movement is felt. As you have most likely worked out tightening the 12 mm nuts any tighter does nothing other than be a danger of shearing the thread off. The work around is to loosen the two 12 mm nuts, then move the the triangle sections at angles to each other to try and trap the column more effectively, other than that its a new column as they come as part of it! when getting in and out of the car there is a tendency by most to use the steering wheel to aid getting in and out and this is what breaks the plastic dowels.

thanks matey, i shall make some hard plastic dowels that fit then, seems the most appropriate course of action for that.

I had the same problem, I did what jeff said and it works fine, I did however cut out some rubber matting into squares x4 and drilled a hole in them so that it would grip the metal to metal easier. it helped to. worth a try . cant hurt. ;)
