Hiya folks, fitting powder coated water pipes and thought I'd change the thermostat while at it since I was in there, so the originals are aparently rated 76.5 degrees, as was the replacement I bought, but the one that's in the car is rated 62 degrees , another reason for changing it was when driving the car the heaters are pretty shit and temp dips quite a bit until idling then it rises to around the half way mark (normal) making me think it may be ****ed and jammed open, but now seeing the temp rating on it makes sense and visually there's buggerall wrong with it, il test it in hot water and all that but just thought I'd ask you lot what temp thermostats ya use and if anyone's had the likes of this fitted! .......... And a wee pic of my colourfull engine so far. :) ImageUploadedByTapatalk1397862992.719450.jpg

Engine looking great Davy, as for the thermostat i cant say ive noticed or looked just bought one new and fitted it without thinking about the temp lol

Jeff or MJP will probably be best to answer that one if they have come across any differences.

I'd personally stick with stock as it dictates your minimum operating temperature where it will cool it if it gets any hotter than it's opening temperature. Considering it was fitted with the higher temp stat as Nissan intended and a huge percentage of engine wear is when the engine is not at it's operating temperature.

The thermostat doesn't actually aid cooling. It just dictates when your cooling system is active. So if you have a poor cooling system, your going to overheat anyway.

It was probably a nismo stat which opens earlier and wider I believe to allow better cooling. Not overly usefull on a road car though as it won't allow you to reach operating temp quickly or easily.

C'mon....any excuse for a bay piccy !!

Powder coated water pipes eh, I've polished mine but I'm seriously thinking of doing them gunmetal at the same time I send the plenum off to do the same, will be a bit less upkeep :confused1:.

62 degrees is a Nismo thermostat, im pretty sure i have one in mine, the car will still come up to temp at the same speed, the thermostat will just open sooner keeping the engine around 74 degree's with a after market radiator (slightly cooler than the temp the OEM one opens), engine temps under load will raise to 77, and on hot days will still reach around 80, which is what mine does, as im pretty sure i have a Nismo thermostat in my car as it idles at 74, under load its 77

If I remember right I had paperwork with the car and pretty sure an invoice from jeffs place for the thermostat supplied n fitted, yea I know what it will do and the difference it will make but I'm just wondering why........ Is it to avoid head gasket issues?? Other than to be fitted to a track car which see's hard use I see no other point in it, just wondering which one to put back in lol

Oh and cheers all for the comments :)
