Hey guys, I new to the Z game, so I thought I'd check a quote I got.

My car is producing a LOT of blue smoke. I have been told to try replacing the PCV valves. Failing that, it's Turbo reconditioning time.

I also require a new clutch. I believe I was quoted £250 for the clutch, £600 to have both turbos reconditioned and £400 to fit the clutch and turbos.

Seem fair?

For £600, is it worth buying a pair of turbos and selling on my old ones as needing a recon?

Thanks,

Alex

Sounds too cheap. The rebuilding of the turbos will cost than that alone and the labour to remove and refit more. I wouldn't be surprised to see quotes of £1300-1500 for turbo replacement. Equally a half decent clutch assembly is going to cost you a fair amount, although labour isn't too bad, few hours.

If your turbos are goosed they as units to rebuild are virtually worthless.

Wow did not know Aldi had entered the garage trade :w00t: seriously though as you have mentioned Alex your new to the zed scene you do need to understand that with zeds many engine jobs the labour content can be double or triple the cost of parts as everything is so compactly fitted. I can only imagine the prices you have been quoted are for all of the work to be done at the same time and using the removed gearbox to aid access to the turbo`s as its often the case the engine is removed for this job, and new quality turbo`s would be a lot more than you have been quoted.

So back to your smoke issue, what are the exact symptoms? does it smoke at tick over, in traffic, or when under hard acceleration and /or overrun? any further information would help you get some assistance here.

It smokes at tick over, it smokes under hard acceleration and it's an absolute pothead on overrun! Blue smoke always

To be fair that doesn't seem that far off, an oem clutch was between 250 and 300 last time I bought one, my turbos were rebuilt with stage 2 360degree bearings and cost 360 each,

And labour wise you could bring it to the garage I work in for 400 cause my boss would pay the fitter 100 a day to fit the parts would take at worse 2 days, and my boss would have 200 in his pocket,

A clutch in and out laying on my back takes me around 3hrs, and ive changed a few sets of turbos with engine in with no problems, and with the box off there would be even more room...

Wow, nice £200 for doing nothing in his pocket!! ................. Oh hang on a second, rent, rates, electric, gas, water rates, tax, insurance, warranty percentage, if you work in a garage then surely you understand overheads? that £200 will be well hacked down after two days, and products like antifreeze and oil, gaskets and even clips, tie wraps all have to be paid for, bet your boss has to pay the fitter at least Nation insurance contributions maybe pension contributions and holiday pay, all of these things and more need to be factored into the cost of jobs, anyone who runs a business will tell you the boss is the last one to get paid, unless of course he is pocketing the cash illegally. :whistling:

It depends on the garage we mainly do mots and he has more then 1 fitter, so he would make 200 quid on top of the bills the mots alone here pay every bill,

But the main thing I'd be worried about is the company doing it right, I didn't mean it to offend anyone it just depends where you get the job done,

Some people don't have huge out goings I worked mobile for a while and could earn lots of money for very low prices,

I took my mot test an have been doing mot test and not working on cars,

My boss charges 40quid a test and I mot 10 cars a day average thats 400 a day for just me and does not barely pay me a 100, so I know how much garages earn, my boss has lots of propertys he didn't get them from no where...

And then he has all the mechanical work the fitters earn too...

And he pays me cash self employed so he pays nothing no pay roll here...

I could make a suggestion... However it would require some risk and bravery.

Do the work yourself? Quite easy jobs to do if you can handle a spanner

Thanks for the offer, but I'd be loyal to the quoter. I'm glad the price is about right. I'm reasonably competent but I'd rather not tackle a job life this yet!

Are there any little things I should do while there?
