One for the Techno heads this...

Was looking up a part number for Russ on TT.net and decided to have a look at the PTU or Transistor Ignition Unit as they prefer to call it.

What was going on, bad design from the start or something? No wonder they were recalling, but we didn't get the recall here(as usual!), why not?

Check this out:-

0789-0993 Hitachi

0789-0993 Mitsubishi

0993-0795 Hitachi

0993-0795 Mitsubishi

0795- Mitsubishi

And to top it off, all different part numbers aswell. So, if your PTU goes down and you need a new one, do you opt for Mitsu. or Hit.???

I had mine replaced recently, and I remember looking at it and seeing Mitsubishi on it and thinking "What the f**k is that doing on my car???". Are 300's basically ringers, made up of all the parts from Mitsubishis' parts bins? Scarey?

Anyone cast a light of explanation on this for me(us)...

Thanks

Tim(confused and disorientated or should that be "dis-oriental-tated")

Dont panic, it's the electrical companies names, not car makers, you'll see you crank angle sensor is made by the same companies too and no doubt a few other parts as well.

Yep, that's what worries me as they are the nastey parts that keep failing...it's a conspiracy, Mitsu. and Hitachi got together secretly and decided to shag Nissan over! Sold them dodgey parts for years whilst they put the decent parts in the GT and FTO's...you never know!

;-)

The early ones (89-93) are the dodgy ones, especially the Hitachi is known to fail.

If you can, get the newer Mitsubitshi PTU's, but you'll need an additional wiring harness to be able to connect them..or just solder the wires straight onto the pins of the PTU wink.gif
