As you may recall, Just over a month ago, I repalced my Zed.

Well it is MOT time and it has failed big time, it looks like they have found a load of rust around the sill, inner arches and seatbelt mount areas.

Also excessive blue smoke so failed its emmitions, which I had had once but stopped and I have been speaking to Jeff about getting the PCV valves replaced.

Not looking forward to going home tonight as I am going to haver to explain to the better half why a month old car is going to either cost a lot of money to get right or be scrapped.

One question that I have been asked to post is when others have chopped out the sills and fears of the floor, have they braced the doors?

My welder friend is worried the car might fold a bit with all of this metal cut out.

Be assured nothing will fold up, nor will the subframe fixing be any problem, been involved with welding repairs on zeds for years and even the corrosion weaken them to a point that heh welder would need to take any bracing prevention.

To prove a point remember the repair to this:

and the donor car this:

With the sill, rear quarter and return into the pillar removed no bracing needed and nothing moved.

Thanks for that Jeff. Feel better knowing an expert has advised.

I know this is in the realms of hens teeth but do you have a donor car that has a decent floor pan? I can wait until you have stopped laughing for a response ! :innocent:

Floor pans are not normally that bad but unless its a large part its quicker to just fit a new section made up from fresh metal, and don`t have full breakers any more they use up too much space that can be used for customers cars!!

Well I took the carpet out today to see how bad the floor pan was.

Well the floor looks good as you can see (any water is because it was pouring it down and the door was open a bit and I hadn't realised).

I know there are two holes in the floor, one is below the rear seat area but cannot be seen from within the cabin. The other I think is behind the ECU's in the footwell, so will take that out once the car is on stands.

I will get some pictures of the rust and holes tomorrow.

I have put up some of my repair pics in my garage section if you want to look.... Redwine300 and Ruishy1 helped me with what to do and loads of moral support.......lol

Here's my thread..... http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?170294-Rust-holes-in-Floor-Sills-Help-Please

If you have a good welder and fabricator they should be able to mend the bits you have said relatively easily.....

I take it the mounts were all okay and it is just some floorpan patching then?

Well the c**p has hit the fan ! we have been working on the bodywork, identifying where the holes are and assessing how to attack it. Came to do a compression test on the engine today because of the blue smoke. Best cylinder was 150 and No 6 only registered 25 ! all of the plugs were loose so it looks like it was going for a while.

Really gutted, feel like I have been conned and sold a dud. Anyone want a project car?

Gutted for you mate and after you started to get parts for it  Its maybe time to cut your loses and sell up and start again.

Sorry to hear that too mate:sad:

It certainly does show that the reputation of some cars really does remain with them, despite how badly subsequent owners treat them. All the best in what you decide to do; I really do not know what else to say.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Who sold it you bud?-was it off here?

Surely a S/h lump would fix her....................

What do you mean?

My machanic friend said everything from the coil connectors to the spark plugs wre only finger tight as though someone had put sealer into the cylinders then put everything together to see if it fixed the issue but didnt go back to tighten everything up.

Ok, just wanted to be clear that the compression test was carried out with the compression test plug done up (wouldn't

be the first time that has happened). If the engine is a write-off (beyond economical repair) are you prepared to do an engine

swap on this car? Is the rest of the car mechanically sound?

On the body work, apart from the areas you have described previously, how does the rest of the car look, have you

had her up on a ramp for inspection?

It was from someone on here, who had just bought it from someone else on her (niether regular visitors and have not been on for a bit)

With the compression so low on all cylinders and No 6 effectively 0, I think the engine is beyond repair. I have the problem that my mechnic cannot do an engine swap until the summer and the car will have ti sit in his front garden as I have no where to put it.

Dont want to make a snap decision as at the moment I am pretty depressed about it (made worse by the wife being very understanding!).

Really want another Zed but would have to sell or scrap this one first.

Oh before you fall on your sword can I ask a few questions fist

1) Does it feel like a misfire when running or running ok?

2) Was the engine cold when you did the test?

3) Does the smoke from the exhaust get worse under boost or is it tick-over smoke?

4) Were the plugs all removed at the same time?

5) Was the throttle held open when the test was done?

6) was the battery fully charged before hand

7) Was the no 6 plug wet or oily?

Compression tests can be a very good way of seeing some of what`s going on with the engine, however, despite the very low no 6 figure it certainly does not tell you everything, getting the test wrong can also give weird figures, such as no 6 showing low as its usually the last one to be done and the battery cranking speed getting slower especially if the plugs were not all taken out at the same time, the throttle not been held open is another one that will show mixed cylinder figures, the engine temp is very important as I have known to zeds that will have a low cylinder when cold but comes up to the same as the other cylinders when warmed up ( tends to feel like a miss when cold though)

Of course non of my questions will be the completely the answer to such a low no 6 cylinder but all may not be lost, what you have to consider also is having a leak down test, this is better at providing detail with rings, inlet and exhaust valves, you could have a chipped valve? finally if you do have a damaged cylinder again all not lost in terms of repair, I guess time scale and facilities is more the problem for you.

Boosting 14PSI

Mines ECU Map

Modified JDM maps are risky in this country unless you're running 99RON & octane booster. Assuming the figures are correct, it's likely the ringlands on cyl 6. Hence the numerous owners in just a few months.

Hope you get it sorted.

Well had a week to think it over and chat to the wife (so far its cost a spa weekend for her, but well worth it!). I am worried that if we dig deeper we will find something else, so I have lost all confidence in this one.

So if anyone wants to buy it as is for £1,800 then its yours, otherwise I will break it and then add wat I had budgeted to repair this one and get another. Have my eye on one but need to get some cash together first.
