Yes Z cars Jeff as a boy it is one program I can just about remember along with there opening tune. A great police drama in its day and yes nothing to do with our Jap cars. Black and white TV with two or maybe three channels and no remote control :)

RIP Jimmy.

I like you can only just remember the programme Gary, and the theme tune is actually called Johnny Todd. Of course "New Town" or "Newtown" can't quite remember which way it was spelled, but it was actually filmed in Liverpool, in the town of Kirkby. Or kiiiiiiirby if your a Scouser.....lol.

The theme tune is played at Everton's home matches, and was adopted as their theme tune just as "You'll Never Walk Alone" was adopted by Liverpool as their theme tune.

Black and white TV and 3 channels is right, the kids these days don't know they're born. My two will not watch anything in black and white, they consider it to be boring....lol.

Didn't they do a spin off series called Softly Softly? I remember all the old Jags in that - they were all black

They did do a Softly Softly, and it was a spin off of Z cars.

As the constables, Colin Welland, Brian Blessed, James Ellis, Joseph Brady and Jeremy Kemp became household names, plus Stratford Johns as Det. Chief Inspector Barlow, and Frank Windsor as Det. Chief Supt. Watt. Clips show the first episode, Four of a Kind (02/01/1962) and A Place of Safety (24/06/1964), the series three episode repeated in 1992 as part of a BBC2 race issues season.

Link to a an early episode, pre-chat mentions race attitudes not reflecting todays thought...

A grand bloke who I'm sure will always be remembered by us oldies as Sgt Lynch although he did start out as a P.c. in the first series. He did lots of other good work too but I will always remember him as the above character. R.I.P.
