Looking at buying a 300zx - What about this one...

Hey guys,

Thought I would post this 300zx - Wondering if these are simple fixes in the terms of a ZX?

Found the add on Pistonheads http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/nissan/300zx/nissan-300zx-twin-turbo/2059700?isexperiment=true - Think its rather cheap but what do you guys think? Will it need much money spent on it to get it straight?

Was thinking I could get some black leather seats or bucket seats... to deal with that issue but dont know what fits atm.

In general please offer your advice...

In general please offer your advice...

Veilside body kit not to everyone's taste, but looks like it needs very little body wise, seat is a common problem with most low sports cars and speedo probably has a mph convertor which is a common issue, but other speedo fixes available here.

Quite cheap for a TT you need to ask what is wrong with it for that price, check the sills if possible behind the skirts and have a look under neath, check for any engine noise or rattles, smoke from the exhaust.

If all looks good then you might get a bargain with very little to spend.

I think that bodykit puts a lot of people off. Personally I'd steer clear of it on looks alone, but if you're still keen, do check for sill rot as groover has suggested. Skirts act as crud catchers and can often hide an amount of terminal rot.

Thank you! So by the sounds of things the Veilside kit isn't liked with you guys?

What would I need to look out for the turbos as this is a point I have never owned a turbo car! Auto box what do I need to listen and look for?

It divides opinion. Some like it, but generally, it's not known for being particularly well liked.

Absolutely. But it's all a matter of personal taste. If you like the look of it, then go for it.

You are looking for smooth gear changes on the autobox and being able to drive in every gear, often an autobox can appear sluggish or not changing at the correct rev points, however if the TPS (throttle body sensor) is incorrectly set, this will affect the gear change points, more so than a manual. There is a diagnostic for the autobox, which can be done when viewing to see if there are ay fault codes, again in the tech faq section.

Turbos are a little harder to determine the condition of with a quick viewing, but with the engine up to temp on a test drive, look for any smoke in the rear view mirror with the foot down slightly, look for any obvious signs of oil leakage around the turbo area.

Another good read in the faq section with points to look for when buying a zed http://www.300zx.co.uk/tech/BuyingZ.htm

Yeah, I know what you mean... Just guess I am one of the few that do like them...

What's your budget?

The car above has 101K on the clock (not 61K as stated). Thoroughly check sill areas, if you can get it up on a ramp. Nice

wheels. Not keen on body kit, but each to their own.

My budget is... The money I get from the car sale & the savings I am starting... And the sale of a set of BBS RK wheels I have... So... Around 2.5k and if I'm patient 4k in 4ish months...

How much can I get a low mileage TT manual for?

Mileage is less important than condition of the car and particularly in the case of bodywork and rust. These

cars are anything up to 25 years old and can have had quite a few owners. History is important, has the car

been regularly serviced, with money spent on repairs as needed? Are you mechanically minded or are you

going to rely on a garage to maintain the car? There are plenty of Zeds being broken for spares so parts

can be obtained for reasonable money and new parts are available from Mike@MJP. If you are using a garage

then labour costs need to be factored in. If you buy from someone in this Club you will have the benefit of

knowing that the car will have been discussed on the forums and know more about its history, condition

and reliability.
