I'm just looking for some general opinions on the subject of reshelling. :)

How labour-intensive is it likely to be to transfer a TT engine, loom and manual conversion into an NA auto bodyshell? Is it just likely to be far more hassle than it could ever be worth?

I've already done a manual conversion but an engine / loom swap is daunting, to say the least!

I'd say pretty straight forward,

Worse bit is gonna be fitting the intercooler pipework, would need to make or use brackets from original car,

The bit where the radiator drops into you could do with them from tt and put them on the new shell.

You could use the na loom just use a boost controller to control the boost.

But the loom can come out with engine, just unplug it at the ecu, you have to remove few bits behind glove box...

the engine, loom and gearbox around a weekends work if your ok around a car,

With all the other bits probably a couple of weekends,

Hmmm. Seeing it written like that makes it all sound relatively straightforward... :)

I'm just weighing it up as a (possibly) cheaper way to have a SWB, mate.

The likelihood is that all I'll ever do is talk about it... but I do fancy having a shortie...

Nothing is impossible!

Do you have a) the time, and b) the space to have two cars in bits next to each other without tripping over everything?

If you took your time over the winter months, doing a bit here and a bit there on the weekends, for sure you will be driving a SWB in the Spring...

A: Not really :(

B: Er... can I store one above the other...??

Gotta love pipe dreams, eh...

I'd say do it with a tt shell as the insurance side will mean more explaining

Tis a good point, Lee.

Anyone got any ideas as to whether the TT change would need to be explained to DVLA or not as well...?

I've re shelled mine twice,

Its not that bad, even sprayed the whole thing before putting it back together.

When I had my unit took a week, strip it paint it and put all the parts from my uk zed on it...

So even the dash everything was off stripped to the shell...

This is it now, its taken me a long time this time cause I've done it at home, I stripped it all then re under sealed it all,

Had to send it somewhere else to be painted.

and rebuilding engine and having to save up the money...

Im a mechanic so I work on cars, so it was ok for me to do the nuts and bolts, I allways mess up on the bodywork side of things and I've had to get others to do that.

But if u have the space and time go for it, your zed will mean a lot more to you in the finish...

I guess what I mean is that the car reg will reflect an N/A and so will the chassis number. Night also make it harder to sell. And you'd have to explain to your insurer every year that its modified.

I'd say no it's a massive amount of work, can be really frustrating at times and to be honest you'd be better off doing some extra re-trims with the time and buying what you want

Hi Bird, Doesn't the DVLA just register petrol or diesel and engine size and number?

I didn't realise the DVLA knew if it was an N/A or a TT....

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!
