Hi, just Got the car back up and running after a gearbox change, previous box showed signs of internal damage ie intermittent gear selection problems, but what ever the problem it would never get out of 2nd. At the time i never checked fuses, Gearbox ECU etc.. i was told the box needed changing and took it on faith. However , now the new box is installed (which was taken on faith yet again it was fine) when i took it out for its first run, it would only use 1st and 2nd in D mode. i have recently had it pointed out that the problem might be external to the box ie the fuses, Gearbox ECU, etc...

So i have found out how to put it into diag mode, which i will try soon and give the results, i found this site

http://z32.wikispaces.com/Automatic+Transmission+Diagnostics

which looks great anyway in case anyone hasn't found it yet. i know where the Gearbox ECU is located but need to know if the GB has any fuses that blow and if so where are they

I cant think of any other issues that might affect the smooth running of the box but again, if anyone knows better please advise.

Another question, when i press the overdrive? button, a light illuminates on the RH set of warning lamps called "MISSION OIL" (i think it means transmission oil) has a wire gone astray? have i somehow got a rogue dash unit.

Kind Regards

Rich

Thats what I thought. Although not 100%, just because I think I had a faulty maf years ago but it didn't throw a code up.

Hi, not sure if anybody help, I have got a 1992 Convertible, the automatic gearbox has decided to stop playing. The gearbox will work for a couple of miles then will stop working, it will not change up or down. If you then stop for 10 mins, the gear box will work again for a couple of miles. Does this mean a new gearbox or is there something that I should be checking first??

Many thanks for any advice

Sounds like you need an oil change and clean the strainer, as the oil drops back down to the pan, so does all the crap, then it seems you can drive it for a while till it clogs up again.

Many thanks, strained the old oil out, very brown and not the best smelling substance either! Will try the strainer next.

Did the OP find out what the problem was?

I have the same issue except with no error codes, don't want to replace

The gearbox if it's an electrical issue.

Cheers

Hi,

I posted on this in another thread, as I have had the same problem previously. Chances are, your auto 'box is dead - so you have three choices....

1. Bite the bullet and go for a manual conversion - cost could be upwards of £2k, depending on where you can source the parts and who you get to do the work. Personally, I would not trust anyone other then Jimmer.... Risks - you're still buying a 2nd hand 'box.

2 & 3 depend on whether you want to stay auto... so:

2. Get a full professional auto-box rebuild. Cost (again) around the £2k mark nowadays - but you will get a warranty if you use a reputable auto 'box specialist. Risks - hopefully none as the work will be warrantied.

3. Buy a GOOD (and I stress the word "good" - adding preferably a KNOWN good) auto-box and get a reputable person to instal it. Again, I would rather Jimmer did this than anyone else.... Cost = less than £1k, depending on what you can buy the 'box for.

I had the 'box on my current Zed replaced  last year - I bought a very good, known, replacement from a member on here and Jimmer fitted it for me. Thing is, Jimmer also knew the 'box was good... Don't buy any old auto-box, so many people have, only for them to fail shortly afterwards.

A few members have had recent manual conversions and are selling their old auto boxes; my advice, buy one of those - you know it's been working without issue prior to being removed!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

There you go - this is the best option for anyone with auto 'box woes, who is not ready, willing or able to go manual just yet 😉

I’ve done more happy miles in my Z since my manual conversion than 3 autobox fail in 8 years

If u want to keep an auto as Richard says 👍
