....Jeff's thread got me reminiscing over the old Network Q / Lombard RAC rallies of the 80s and 90s. You know what used to really give me the buzz and get me in the 'zone', was that theme tune! As much as I still love the WRC, the older 80s and 90s days - Group B aside, I hold more fond memories of this era. More manufacturers, more excitement. Reporters Tony Mason, William Wollard and all of it.

....but that theme tune! Play loud and think of Mitsubishi Galants, Lancia Deltas, Toyota Celicas and Escort Cosworths! Original tune was buy a group called Propaganda and their tune Jewelled and was remixed for the series.....remix version below also.

Original remix - full version....still puts the hairs up on the back of my neck!

Personally I liked the BTCC series from the early 1990s - one year (after I had recently bought a nearly new Toyota Carina E GTi - the 173bhp version) I "obtained" tickets to one of the races at Silverstone. Toyota hospitality tent privileges and all; what a great day!!!

I went to the BTCC a few years later at Thurxton. I remember the Carina E there. I also remember the old Lagunas, MK1 Mondeos, Vectas, 406s, the dominating Alfa 155s and of course the newly launched Volvo 850 estates. No one really knew what to make of them when they first appeared on the circuits. They didn't do too badly for their first season from memory. Volvo bosses at the time suggested that the estate was entered as it was more aerodynamic than the saloons. Their idea never really caught on, thankfully, but it made for an interesting season!

Many moons ago i had an Opel Manta with the full 400 rally kit on and painted in Rothmans colours , a few of us popped upto Clumber Park in Nottingham where there was a stage of the Lombard rally taking place , i got waved straight through into the park when everyone else got stopped and had to pay , i think they thought i was a competitor ! result . lol

Opel Manta - what a great car Daz.....

...I had an earlier one in my late teens - a 1978/9 Berlinetta 1.9 coupe (as opposed to hatch) in Sapphire Blue; which I treated to a nice PMC set of upgrades. Twin Webbers, PMC exhaust system, electric ignition and a new camshaft.

Loved that car!!!

I had a stock GTE hatch in metallic anthracite grey and a GTE coupe with 400 kit , dark pearl purple, rollcage and compromotive split rims with an opel monza 3 litre engine swap fully aeroquip hosed and polished. Happy happy days.

I still have that Propaganda track on 12" vinyl, boom old skool

Sounds sweeeet bud !! , i knew a fella from Grantham with a yellow GTE with a similar setup , Senator 24v 3.0 engine and 400 kit , in fact it was this car that was featured on the cover of the first edition of Retro magazine !

It was a stunner and fast !

I've had more Mantas than enough in my time! From bog standard GT/Js through to GT/Es and Exclusives and a few 400 replicas (including a 3 litre conversion)... my first ever was a B series coupe that had been professionally converted to an aerotop!

I keep looking at them on eBay and wishing I was richer... :(

I know where theres a black coupe GTE 34000 miles, under a dust sheet in a centrally heated garage. Ive got first dibs if he wants to sell it too. Would love to get my hands on a mint 2.8i celica supra. Ive had 2 of them and loved every minute of owning them.

Forgot to say , the one in Rothmans colours had a 2 litre twin cam and five speed box from a Fiat 132 Mirafiori in it , manta v8 and me dropped it in one weekend , a cheap power and trans upgrade at the time ! lol
